Insanity done wrong can be really freaking annoying. I'd stay away from the over the top stuff.

Machi is the master. He plays insane with this degree of respectability that makes you wonder if you are the crazy one...then he pulls out the named chickens and does a magic show as a non sequitur in the middle of a conversation.

Plu, of course, finds it delightful.

Insane can take many forms but the best are the interesting ones that let the other person interact with them on a level other than " I'm so crazy man, I'll kill you if you touch my stuff *Makes wild bug eyes*"

God I hate that part of his comic. So retarded. =P

Speak and emote random stuff to yourself frequently. Change the tone in which you speak suddenly, such as speaking softly to random outbursts. When making conversation with others, speak incoherently, and reply incoherently sometimes with something that doesn't have to do with the topic.
Or speak OOCly at all times. I imagine a lot of people would treat you as if you were crazy. But I doubt a lot of people will like that.

It might also help if you refer to yourself in the third person..

Walk around asking people if they can see you, than act outraged when they say they can.

Answer everything that's said to you with: "Did you want fries with that?"

Giggle like a girl periodically, for no reason at all.

Caveman is exactly right though. If you play a character that's impossible to interact at a functional level it's annoying as hell. Completely insane, deaf, mute or even deaf and mute are all interesting for about five minutes. When it becomes possible for the nicest paladin in the world to consider death for said character you've gone way overboard.

I used to have a schizophrenic char. He would switch accents and would either smile and be all confident or sometimes he'd be stuttering. To make the whole thing perfect, I made lvled him half fighter, half mage. So the Evil would be the fighter, trying to gain the power of magic, while the Good side wants to prevent the Evil from gaining it, so he would not harm people that much. Lead to interesting monologues ;-)

Pump charisma. Nothing says mad like using your charisma mod for will saves

On a serious note I used to play a schizophrenic halfling who on a good day would be an extrovert trader and in-your-face invisible blade (Percy finknottle). On a bad day he would be the hooded introverted assassin that was his core personality. (Malik Al'masiyef).
Just remember because your insane doesnt mean your an airhead; Your crazies are normally very sharpminded and quite dangerous. The best example of this I can think of is Mad Jack (Redjack's character?).

                        Happy hunting!

run into a group of monsters the melee characters of your party is fighting then cast fireburst while laughing like a maniac. Bluff your way out of it by saying "I didn't see you there, sorry!"
