  • My char concept/exp dilemma

Whats really aggrivating me is that this is all turning into a siphon for one basic-type of character concept. Goodly warrior!

The goodly Warrior: a - goes out and finds trouble
b - has no problem gaining allies in this endevor
c - will gallavantly aid all who he/she comes in contact with.

This is fine and all, but this is the only real way you can get exp and get any better. Rp extremist would say they'd be satisfied rping a farmer...but that'll get stale real quick if you never get to be a better farmer.
My problem is, that Im sick of those chars. They do nothing for me, they are boring and overdone. My good chars are career men, ppl enjoy the simpler things in life and follow the rules. My evil chars are the ones that go out and find trouble. Its just too bad there are never other like-minded ppl to go out and party with, and when they are, its just way too far and between! I get to hav a decent party every other week, while copy-paste adventurer gets to have a party everyday.

The only reason why Im posting this of course, is because I've lost ex orbit amounts of xp that will take me forever and a day just to get back (from one death mind you). If I was cookie-cutter paladin, I wouldnt whine in the least. Those 5-10s add up when its a days worth of SAFE killing with your beloved party. Oh, but whenever the poor lone evil guy tries to get anything, they are marked as a grinder, and probably die because they're by themselves.
I cant play as Josef, because I just didnt make him that way...notice how I didnt say 'built' him that way. He can do combat if he really tried, and easily form a party, he's just a stay-at-home adventurer. Do I get anything out of it...no. I get conversations...I get the occasional 'gj' for my music...its ok, but its not gonna put food on the table in a metaphorical sense.
And before any of you reply with "Stop whinning, or stop playing" kinda crap. I want you to stop and look at what kinda char you have, and what kind of activities YOU get to do everyday...coz Im sure as hell not getting involved in em. Until things get better, Im just going to play as Josef and sit at taverns and talk all day. And ya know what, at least I'LL be playing my character.

Im sry if I offended anyone, this just had to be said. *puts on fire resistant garb*

Well, Maia's caught the eye of Lord Silpheth Lorvaena, so, he might ask her hand in marriage.

That introduces a lot of roleplaying opportunities if you ask me! XD

    Seriously though...

You mention 10th-level grinder in another post, but I'd like to point out that, as far as I saw, the only thing that gives me any experience points is Chief Muckspear or Chief Mossclaw... and that's something like... 6? 4? The rest is a plain zero. Therefore, yes, it is easy to adventure and get your pert behind handed back to you with a heftly 1k+ experience debt.

There's still two things you can gather, though:
    - Currency
    - Reputation

Even if the gnolls don't give me any experience points, they do still have drops which adds to my funds. Then, these funds are resources that are for me to use. Secondly, time spent around a firecamp chitchatting with others - although sometime not all that exciting, makes you better known. If your character establishes himself and gains some form of credibility, then, you gain power of another kind which are not merely levels and experience points.

In the end, it's about how you roleplay and how you are remembered.

Know how you feel all to well. Perigo is always ostracised, even sometimes without having a history of being bad with a particular group of people. Sometimes he isn't welcome because he's short and wears black clothing. There was one scenario where the people will remain un-named for respect (there was no hard feelings) where one character who has it in for Perigo was able to convince Perigo's own friends that he should not be welcome to come! His friends dismissed him.

At the end of his day, the bottom line is, Perigo is always alone. I have 4k's worth of lost experience to prove it. After giving up on trying to find a group that was more receptive to Perigo's ways, and being badgered out of town by what he likes to call "whimsical accusations..." I wandered alone.

Being the underdog is *never* easy my friend. I would love to hook up with you and do some adventuring/troublemaking. But then again, I don't know you in character, which makes things difficult.

IT GOES 40 MINUTES, but not seconds. Draw off by the pillar of fail!

Yep, I hear you too Ichbin. I RP Drake as a loaner looking for someone and rarely ever do anything besides sit around and watch people RP. I mean I could jump in and RP but Drake just isn't that kind of person and he is VERY un-charasmatic. Sometimes I think I should just rolling up an Elf so I can RP with all the other 5000000 Elves that are active when I am online but, I don't want to play and Elf, I just want to play Drake. I have seen soooo many people abandon their mains because they are so far behind in the exp curve and it makes me a little sad but hey, it's their caracters.

Also, I really think the exp penalty for death should be done away with now that exp is much, much harder to aquire.

Oh, and isn't going to an area and killing for drops also considered grinding? Or am I just confused?

All you roguish types could band together if it's getting that rough... Form your own guild perhaps? Start planning similar times to be on?

When I am on with Ravenor, I roleplay to see exactly how uncomfortable I can make some characters... I find buttons to push... I get as creepy as I can and find ways to instill discomfort... Do I get exp for it? No... Do I get gold for it? No... I get the satisfaction of a character well played and inserting some sort of distraction (good or bad) into someone else's day. Truth be told, Ravenor is a weakling... the roleplay I get with him is priceless though...

A guild would be a damn lot of fun. But, Drake's background has him already serving a guild back home.

If your current roleplay cripples your character's opportunities... change the roleplay.

Yeah... it's something I knew I would be getting into when I made my character tho. There's no question that good aligned players (or those who always act good aligned) reap more benifits. That's fine... just means us evil / outcast players need to find ways to band together.

There's more DM events for the good doers because it's easier to get a group of people participating in it. I can't tell you how many times my character had to walk away from a DM event because it just didn't make sense for him to be in it. I think if we gathered as a group... it not only would be easier for us to make our way in the world, but easier for DMs to work with our characters in events that are more in line with their personas.

                  ...

                  Good post...

Here's what I've found. I play a true neutral character (Rogue), and a Neutral Evil character (Necromancer) mainly. With the neutral character, I find myself always thinking what's best for me, and he's less of a fighter, and more of a politician, so he often times RP's with people to seek information, and manipulate situations to his advantage.

Now...the big part of the post...my evil character tags along with 'good' characters to test his magic. His intentions are evil, but he realizes that at his beginning stages as a magician, he doesn't have the power he desires to cause evil. I find that the 'evil' based characters have a hard tiime RP'ing together. Here's an example:

I am a necro (Still level 3 after over a week, cause the RP is tough). I was approaching the goblin caves with a 'do-gooder' when a character demanded money to enter in tribute to her evil god. I thought, "Oooh, this will be fun". I stayed back and let the do gooder "Do good" and talk about unfair, etc. As I was saying that "I like you drow, we should talk", he just attacked and killed me (One hit...easy when you have 18 hps, and he/she is like level 8 or so). I thought, "What a complete waste". It sort of makes sense, but if you think about it...the 'good' characters have something to fight for...truth justice and the Sunderian way. The evil characters, I feel, sometimes think that evil has to just be running around killing people randomly, and being rude to everyone.

I think things may change as the evil characters become more powerful...there will probrably be more opportunities, etc.

                  Just my thoughts.

Hrm... demanding tribute to enter the lair of the goblins in name of someone's evil god which the goblins do not worship? And the Drow have no domain over? That sounds pretty poor...

I like xp. It makes your character more powerfull. Some people say xp and level should have nothing to do with rp, but it does. Even if we removed the ability to see what the others challenge rating to us was, xp would still mean something. A powerfull person is looked up to, or feared.

This does of course not give you the excuse to grind all day long. But at least it's a motivation. For some characters it's hard. I recieved 25xp for roleplaying with a DM, which was nice, but it's still only one kill in the wilderness. I'm not complaining mind you, i'm just trying to paint a picture here. So even if you were roleplaying like Zeus himself, with two dms constantly boosting you small 25 xp rewards every 5 minutes or so, you'd probably still earn a lot more going out killing bandits with a friend or two.

Oh, but whenever the poor lone evil guy tries to get anything, they are marked as a grinder, and probably die because they're by themselves.
Why is it always that the poor evil guy has to be lonely? I really don't understand this phenomena, where evil people are too proud to work together with others, has to express their evilness in so many different ways that'll it will get him hung when he goes out with the next party.

Myrna is not the most moraly correct person in the world, but at least I seem to be able to roleplay her 10 charisma and 14 intelligence, seeing as I have not mortaly offended someone or spread the vileness of evilness around me yet.

I am like 16660 xp above the curve and have died twice...this means if I were to die again I wouldnt even be lvl 8 anymore lol. And I look at all the lvl 10's going wow..sure wish I was strong like them. Oh then I kill something and get 1xp! yay.

Well, in a few days/weeks, your level 8 character will be gaining XP at a decent rate once more while the level 10 characters will still be gaining 0-1 XP per kill.

That's how the XP system works - you will catch up. In the meantime - if you worry about losing too many XP, don't go out and fight without a reason.

Well, it is your own decision how you make your character in the first place and how he develops in-game - for the most part that is.

If you have fun playing someone who cannot interact with others for longer than they need to turn away and run, then that's fine. Even someone with mental instabilities can be intriguing to play and play with - it just depends if you actually are interested in this.

My guess would be that his mental instabilities would surely have gotten him killed already.
