  • The Price of Fame

One of the issues discussed at the recent community meeting was to help find ways to create more conflict on the server. This isn't a call to arms for PVP--conflict comes in many ways. But I'm a firm believer that conflict is an essential catalyst to good story telling.

Now, in Sundren, PCs / adventurers are special people (no helmets required). They may not be as famous as Balthazar or Mundus, but they are noted as exceptional and stand out. Even rogue types who give no name will find their reputations grow as mysterious men who people fear but never know. As you do more deeds, you gain more levels--thus, your fame becomes larger in the land.

Additionally, Sundren uses factions to drive its stories. Joining organizations like these come with benefits--friends and allies, weapons and armor, and access to treasury or safe houses. They also come with disadvantages--following orders, making enemies, and defending principles you may not believe in.

To pull these thoughts together, PCs in factions will be "called out" more often in the faction forums by leadership. The Cartel may put a hit out on a well-known Exigo PC crafter. The Red Blades may be told to bring their business to a well-known Thayan scribe. The rangers in the outpost may be told to watch a specific, arrogant Legionaire. Or the Triumvirate may be given an order to detain a notorious Black Hand associate. The DMs won't need to be online to drive this, but we'll use the faction forums more to inspire this sort of conflict.

Thoughts and suggestions are welcome here. But keep in mind--Sundren is a faction-driven world. You don't have to join a faction, but the DM staff will concentrate its primary storytelling efforts on factions.

I can't believe that I forgot to mention this in the meeting when we were discussing factions the other day in the meeting. I think if we had something that explained our faction system a bit more clearly it might result in more people joining the factions.

I've looked around and there really doesn't appear to be anything that goes into details about. There are bits and pieces spread all over the site that give hints, but that's about it. I haven't found any true description of how they work or even a good description of what they are. It's one of the reasons none of my characters haven't ever bothered to even consider joining one.

The thing doesn't seem to be documented all that well. Maybe someone who understands it a lot better than I could put something in the wiki that describes the faction system on Sundren. Even go into a few details as to what it is, how to join one, why we have it, etc.

TBS: Are you looking for IC documents that might provide motivation for you to join? Or OOC documents stating the benefits of joining a faction?

I'd be interested in either/both myself. I'll even volunteer to do some data entry if needed!

PL, mostly OOC stuff. There really isn't a "Faction" section of the wiki at all. Just a few sprinkles here and there. I think something like a "Faction FAQ" would be really useful. Here are some questions that would be good as a starting point.

            What is a faction?
            Why join a faction?
What can a faction do for me?
What do I have to do for my faction?
            Who can join?
How do I join? (both IC and OOC info or broad guidelines)
            Can I leave a faction?
            How do I leave one?
If I leave one faction is it possible to join a different faction?

Some of these have sort of been answered in different places at different times and sometimes slightly differently. Having consistent lore in one spot would be kind of nice.

There's the "Organizations" page, which I'll get retitled and include OOC information there. Good suggestion--thanks.

I have to agree with TBS, and PL it's good that you're willing to look into it. Vigo has yet to join or even consider a faction simply because I didn't know enough about them. OOC knowledge of faction benefits will allow folk to make an informed choice or possibly create a char specificly for a faction. Anyway just my 2 coppers for ya.

I'd have to agree with both TBS and PL. Violet has yet to even consider remotely joining a faction - half because she's not the type of PC likely to, and half because there simply isn't enough information readily available to make an informed choice. The very basic ideas of each faction I know, but as to subfactions and anything more than a very basic understanding... it's hard.

Also, though I think it's a great idea of the server to have factions feature as much as they do in Sundren, and do be a driving force behind roleplay, I don't think it's fair, or productive, to focus ALL dm attention on factions. Some? A good deal? Sure, awesome. A majority, even. Because even for PCs who are not part of factions, they will still be caught up in faction-related roleplay. Violet, for instance, has friends in the Red Blades, and the Arbiters. And probably more nefarious organisations that she doesn't know about. :P

I'd also like to point out that not joining a faction, doesn't indicate an unwillingness to contribute towards the server's roleplay, and in many cases unfactioned PCs can be every bit as productive and contributive towards faction roleplay and server events as are factioned PCs. So... I donno. I guess I just want to give everyone a friendly poke not to forget about us, too. After all, a server's health is based upon imagination and creativity, and encouraging people to make and play characters - one should not restrict that to rather pre-conceived characters designed to fit into existing factions, or it'd be a boring world.
