  • Leveling, RP action or inaction?

Okay, with the increse of the level cap and with actions I have witnessed in my time on Sundren, im just once more curious about public opinon. When it comes to leveling it is, undoubtedly, a favorite passtime for anyone playing a game. After all its part of the game to reap that yummie, yummie exp , see your character level up, and wield that new power. But you have to ask yourself, how far does it go in an Rp enviorment? Should everyone be able to walk tall with level 20's? Is having that power an RP interaction, or simply beacuse we, as people, do not like to be the underdog in a situation where we easily have control over it. Sundren handles this fairly well as leveling is not the swiftest thing in the world, and finding RP is easy and plentiful, we have our meeting grounds, we have sending spells to track and talk to people over far distances, and generaly your likely to bump into people if you enter certin, more popular areas.

What I am asking you, the people of the server, do you view leveling in itself as an rp action? (( we all seem to have the good graces to RP during leveling, which is nice)) Or do you believe it is a knee jerk reflex to wanting to have that higher level, that more power and flexibility?

Now, there is one more thing I would like to cover in this before I leave this to the sharks, as it were. One thing that is inevitbly true, you are restricted in your RP by level. There are some places you just cant go with level, you cant have certin professions and skills without the prereq level (( you cant be a master blacksmith, and not know how to do some sort of combat or support fairly well)) but everything is within context, are we judged by our level and ability to roll? The DnD system is somewhat built off of this, but RPers in general tend to shun the complete reliance on it.

I suppose this has become a bit of a ramble , but I am sure thoes that have bothered to read this far have an Idea of what sort of imput I am going for

I want it to be said, this is not a discussion of policy, DM, player or otherwise, I am simply looking for peoples opinions

    Till next post Sundrites!

hmm i guess i look for rp first if there is none to be had or i don't the rp that is to be had. i often turn to picking a character that could use a level or two and start to meander about the valley.... granted i have only been able to do this for at most 30 min. before i either find a good rp bit, someone new logs on and i want to rp with them, or boredom sets in and i log to do other stuff...

there was an occasion when i was trying to level a character, almost incessantly and most assuredly obsessively, but that was in due to a fear of an impending update which ended up messing up my character anyway... that problem is long past and i now feel much better about the whole situation. but yeah i was guilty of "LEVELING"

LOL this is like LEVELERS ANONYMOUS...

I will say that this isnt supposed to be a thread dedicated to levelers anonymous, I myself dont like grinding and only usualy particpate in it if theres an RP purpose, or people I want to RP with are doing the grind(( occasionaly yes, the bug bites and I do do it on my own volition, but that isnt to common)) Im more looking for an overall feel

I think it's pretty simple. The main purpose of D&D is to create characters, go on adventures and have good times with friends. So that's what we do.

Sometimes if we are in a bad mood, we might avoid people and play alone, or if we are in a good mood we go search for others to have fun with. But really levelling is the name of the game and I would dare to say that most people play for this purpose.

Both. I like to think we all have a reason as we are all adventures. Just some have a better reason than others. And the server does cater to certain types of characters over others, which is completely fine. I once played on a server that had a lvl cap of 5 and the only way to gain xp beyond that would be to have a DM reward you. Basically they became the role play judges. It didn't remove adventuring nor grinding as people still wanted gold to buy things but it did help remove that mind set of "must get next level." Or at least force those with that mind set to a mind set of "must role play for next level."

Personally I find that creating characters should revolve about more than statistics and getting better combat-wise, I try to develop some personality and hope to get involved in stories with it. Unfortunately, DMs can't always be around to guide such. I, too, have a difficult time sometimes when feeling like there isn't much to do. And only rarely do I go out to hunt things then (with no RP purpose), because it feels like a pointless passtime that way.

Hello. I am kovah, and I'm a Leveler... *sighs*

Well, seriously, I suppose I am. My RP background is weak and my RP'ing itself is weaker. So, why do I bother to take up a slot here you ask? CAUSE I CAN GO FU.... Oh, uh. What I meant was, I enjoy the interaction. I enjoy watching everyone else RP. I enjoy trying to do so myself from time to time.

I'll be found grinding away when Exigo is barren but when there's folks about I try to hang around and do my best to participate.

As to if I feel that I need higher levels to participate, in some things - yes - for certain. But I've found that, while some "click'ish" type groups have and do form around here, for the most part the old schoolers/high level crowd do their best to provide RP opportunities and include everyone. (not to mention the incredible DMs)

              Cheers!

These days I rarely take my main character places she would not go. This means she will not kill Veritas because they have every right to be up that mountain, but Gnolls and Orcs advancing on her territory are another matter.

I don't quite view it this way with my other characters, though I still try to find IC reasons for grinding.

Sure, grinding can be fun and there are days when I just want to kill things. But then on this server, that comes with its own risk.

But yes, getting XP every now and then can be sweet. Moreso since after level 15 there is no RP trickle.

Depends what type of character I play really.

I see rogues are action RP orientated as with all militant classes along with clerics and druids. Monks can be a purely contemplative class (Derek Jacoby as Cadfael as can Wizards, Bards and Mystics..
You could have a non-combat weapon master who purely trains people or a Montolio'eske ranger who brings up the Drizzt' of Faerun so it can swing either way!

Im fine with the XP trickle to be honest -.-

It all depends on what is going on and how I feel at the time. I don't mind standing around sometimes and talking/rping and fleshing out my characters backstory, which is actually substantial and lengthy. However, sometimes I just want to go out and kill and maybe obtain some gold or a level.

I like that you can usually get a group together and kill things and RP the reason and rp the combat also.

I guess it just depends - sometimes I log on and there is nobody else on the server or only a lower level, so I just sit at the druid glade or kill a few things then log.
