    Population of Sundren

    I was rping today with somebody and started talking about the military of Sundren. I went to the Sundren Wiki and found this.
    "Legion (each ~10,000 people, 10 legions total) (Led by a Myrio)"
    If this was true, that would mean that they have about 100,000 men in just their military alone at about 1370 DR. Then I went to http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki to compare the military force of Sundren compared to other nations and found that the Sword Coast North population is only about 660,960. Waterdeep one of the biggest cities in Faerun has a poplation of about 132,000. Neverwinter has a population of about 23,000. This just doesn't seem right.

    That's the city proper, Waterdeep has over a million residents if you account for sprawl.

      A large portion of the population is in the military ...

      But hey, we made a fictional land so sometimes not everything is to proportion. I would say you should find better things to do with your free time.

        It makes no sense. How can the Sword Coast North only have 660,000 population. While Waterdeep which is part of the Sword Coast North have over a million. Unless of course the population of the Sword Coast North doesn't count those already living in a city.

              I always thought a Legion was 3,000-6,000 soldiers.. which would help the population issue. Atleast a roman Legion was 3-6k I thought modern legions were 1k.

                I've actually looked this over as well, and I agree that an excess of 100,000 soldiers might be a little much. But, like Saulus said it's nothing to worry about.

                There will always be the 'right' amount of soldiers in any given situation, depending on what the DM's deem necessary. Whether that means less or more.

                    Not completely true, in many books or games that has a written history your find the “good guys” empire or Kingdome has a huge standing army that stay somewhere and suffer horrid losses every time they repel an evil force of evilness from the bad lands but only after lots of damage to the land, cities, peasant population and so on. Funny thing is that the next book or chapter in its glories history is normally within 15 years or so and there fully recovered despite half the population getting killed not that long ago. So it’s all down to breeding. Good people have about 10 kids each so 7 of them can join the army at the age of 13, it’s the only way the numbers can possibly add up.

                            Waterdeep is named for its outstanding natural deepwater harbor, and the campaign history states that city that grew up at this site has become the commercial crossroads of the northern Realms. The population of the city is listed as approximately 130,000, but more than one million Waterdhavians make their home within Waterdeep's territory.
                            Over a million people in that territory as was said.

                            Also, Sundren is not a typical city. It's actually a city fortress really, and mainly military.

                            Plus, as said, it's fantasy. I mean, if it wasn't could Menzoberranzan support 20,000 Drow and over 100,000 humanoid slaves UNDERGROUND?! I mean, these people gotta eat and drink!

                              At the outset of the Second Punic War, the historian Polybius tells us in his formula togatorum, Rome possessed the largest and finest army of the Mediterranean. Six legions made up of 32'000 men and 1600 cavalry, together with 30'000 allied infantry and 2'000 allied cavalry. And this was merely the standing army.
