  • Leira/Slain Gods and Their Priests

Since Leira was killed by Cyric in 1360DR and her portfolios absorbed by him, do Clerics and Favored Souls of Leira no longer have their powers, or do they draw from Cyric now and unwittingly worship him? If they receive power from Cyric now, do they use Leira's domains or Cyric's; and what about alignment?

Shar has done a lot of the same sort of business. How should those situations be handled?

No. Leiras death was not like Shar masquerading as a dead deity. So Cyric would not be granting spells to followers of Leira. I don't see why Cyric couldn't have lied or something to mislead followers of Leira into worshiping him though. Leira Church would have seen a massive decline in numbers upon her death.

A small number of Leira's faithful could still be receiving spells from her. Stress "faithful". It has happened many times in the past.

It might be a fun RP to play a cleric/favored soul of a dead god. If your looking for a RP hook, check out connection between Leira, Deneir/Oghma and the Metatext.

Considering they're the gods of deceit... :P

But in both cases Cyric and Shar have taken over the portfolios of the dead gods.

If I am not mistaken, it was later proven that Cyric did not actually kill Leira, but it was merely her grandest of illusions and deceptions.

I believe her clerics and Favored ones still have their power, but for a few years after her 'death' they did not in order to help complete the illusion.

There are some that say that it is not proven either way...

I do believe some of the evil gods play around, sometimes granting spells to clerics of other gods who they've slain. I remember atleast Loth doing it, just to amuse herself. I belive Cyric and Bane might do the same thing on occasions. Doubtfully they'd let such cleric go against their order though.

What I'm getting at is, what happens when a Cleric who follows a particular portfolio now answers to a new Deity?

Leira is gone. Her portfolios now belong to someone else. She's dead and has no way to gain any more power, her divinity is no longer hers. So, who's been giving her Clerics spells for the last 12 years? Cyric could easily be pretending to be her, since he now owns her portfolios of Deception and Illusion, which is why I'm asking

Another situation where we would have seen this question come up is when Jergal handed out some of his portfolios to The Dead Three.

Clerics of Leira not aware of their deitys passing for some reason might get spells from Cyric if the god so felt like. In his madness anything is possible.

There are also cases of shifted loyalties, and I do believe there are cases where single portfolios are worshipped and upholded. Thus a Cleric of Leira could direct his/her worship on the area Cyric had taken from Leira.

On the other hand these clerics would most likely NOT take part in any general worship of Cyric and might get denied their requests for divine spells if their god was moody or otherwise angry.

Clerics are also known to "fake" dedication, where Fzoul Chembryl shifted his loyalty from dead Bane to Cyric, from Cyric to Banes son and back to Bane when he came back from the dead. Obviously his true loyality lied in Bane, but he did get his powers from Cyric and the son of Bane. Either that or he changes his mind more than girls change clothes :P
