It's just a matter of people using their imagination. Instead of grinding monsters for some vaguely defined purpose, make it very specific. Maybe the ogres mugged your grandmother and stole her purse, and now you're determined to hunt every last one of them down until it is found. Then you can lead a small party into the caves and "find" the purse in the darkest corner of the place.

And hell, go all out on it. Have the rangers/druids make survival checks to track the ogres down, spot checks all around to find the damn purse, put a map on the wall that is written in magical runes that only a wizard or cleric can read. Force the fighter to knock down the locked door when you find that the path around has caved in. And then you find out that the purse has actually become cursed, causing the hair of the person carrying it to turn pink, even after it is dropped (might need some DM help on that bit). And then one of the members of the party makes a joke about how the victim's hair is "fabulous." Or maybe that character is just gay.

Obviously there's limitations. You can't create things that would violate the canon, and some ideas might need DM approval first. But players need to be innovative. Otherwise we end up with a character pool of bland, underdeveloped characters who fight for no apparent reason.

Sorry for this in advance. Been hanging around with people who have been playing PnP D&D that remember THAC0 (and have been playing continuously).

Of course we fight for a reason LOOT. Loot, loot it gets the adventurers up to shoot.
