I was wondering if the Alarm spell could be designed in a way as to NOT making those buzzing noises. For some reason, it seems to bug some people (I do not mind so much, though it IS a bit loud). Plus, it seems like it should not be the kind of spell that people should be able to notice except via detect magic or something to that effect. People knowing an alarm spell is present kind of defeats the purpose. If this is something that cannot be done because of some damn Obsidian hard-coding, then it is perfectly alright.

I have to admit though that I am curious as to how the buzzing came about in the first place. Weird curiousity, I know.

I dont understand the purpose of the alarm spell, since I used to use it with my ranger and his attacker may also have heard it and flee

The Alarm spell is useful in PnP DnD for when the party needs to rest or to protect from spies and such, like sneaking thieves and invisible wizards.

Also, it's a mental alarm, that will wake someone but not break concentration. So only the caster can hear it when it is set off. In Sundren it's useful for detecting those pesky +40 hide/move silently rogues that like to listen in on conversations. It doesn't reveal them, but it lets you know they're there.

Yep. I hear that ping and I have Os cast Amplify. 45 listen rolls = helloooooo spy.

If there is no buzzing noise, then enemies stepping upon it cannot see coming the fact that you can see THEM coming.

True, you can cast it in certain areas that a spy or assassin HAS to step in order to reach you, but them fleeing is not as fun you knowing they are coming and them not knowing you know.
