  • Cleric Domains

I understand and appreciate the work you guys do with trying to sort out the realism behind class/diety relationships, but I think that the idea of allowing Clerics use of only the domains in their deity's portfolio is a little harsh. Sure, it makes sense in most ways, but it really screws over some dieties. Kossuth, for example, only has two domains, so there isn't really any choice allowed. I just recently tried to make a cleric of Kossuth with the war domain, but realized that I can't, even though the domain grants the flamestrike spell. I don't expect you guys to go remove the limitations altogether, but I think that some of the dieties aren't represented as equally as the others.

    Thanks.

That's the way she works, just like how we strip people of their divine abilities if they are RPing counter to what their gods beliefs are founded in.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Well I can understand stripping down divine abilites for that, or someone who's trying to choose a domain blatantly opposite of their diety's portfolio, but don't you think that you guys are being a bit narrow?

It's mostly true to PNP, although there's a number of domains simply missing that many deities could use for a few more options. The only exceptions that are made are for deities that can't have clerics at all (no 2 available domains). I think it's a fair system. Maybe more domains can be added at a later point.

whatever happened to the idea of deitless clerics. i heard clerics can simply be clerics of a casue rather than a guy.

Clerics are very powerful in a low magic environment, and in Sundren we like making things more challenging, also we found many people were picking domains that were quite counter to what their deity represents...

Rather than policing the impossible, we enforced the proper domains. We could always use more custom domains of course, but we do what resources allow. The system itself however was designed for a reason, and will not be removed or altered.

I can understand not wanting to enforce people who would (for example) pick fire when they worship Auril, but I was talking more about the bonus spells than anything.
I'll use Kossuth as an example: I can understand destruction being a domain because of how fire causes destruction, but one of the bonus spells is acid? Meanwhile, war, which could be associated with fire, has a flamestrike as a bonus spell.
I'm not expecting you guys to go about making custom domains or new bonus spells for old domains, because I can only imagine how complicated that would be, but I would like to see the options available broadened a bit. Not that I'm saying that tinkering with that system wouldn't be complicated too. ^_^

well.. not to sound too rude but when i made my archer, I took one level of cleric, and i chose to worship Aerdrie Faenya ,whos portfolio includes Air and water, but i could not choose those domains... I have a feeling that possibly this is becuase of how many domains that deity covers but.. You get my point. Safe to say i deleted and started over..

To any newly aspiring clerics, here is handy list to prevent frustration.

And Weather does not equal Water I assume here that she is more related to winds, storms, etc. Though I can see how water (rain, snow and other forms of downpour) could fit into that, there are other gods for the same things.

What I found to be a strange thing was that Jergal doesn't have Death as a domain...

That's because Jergal retired from having death as a domain. He handed the portfolio over to the new god of death, Myrkul, then Cyric, then Kelemvor.

In fact, I'm not quite sure who added Death to his description, as it shouldn't be there. I'll fix it.

He isn't the 'head god' of death, but death is definitely a big part of what he is about. I think all those descriptions come from official source books, by the way. So why change them?

I would still list it, because I can guarantee that any cleric of Jergal would want death as a domain, considering that fatalism doesn't have a domain.

Forgotten Realms Wiki reveals all. Jergal isn't really a god of death, he's just in charge of keeping the records. Basically he's the grim reaper's secretary. Same office, but he doesn't get to lay hands on the scythe. Thus, no Death Domain.

Actually, his favored weapons is a scythe. XD

But yeah, like I said earlier, if I had made Mortarion a cleric instead of a favored soul, I would have wanted death as a domain.
