  • Craft Wand Cost

Firstly, I remember at the moment nothing can be changed on the server so this is just a suggestion for when that problem is resolved and thigns can be changed again.

Okay so I think the costs of craft wand should be reduced. The default prices are clearly designed to work in conjuction with the near unlimited amount of gold you come across in single player as a first level spell can cost more than 6,000 gold to make a wand and some second level spells get upwards of 22,000 gold. Not only is that practically impossible to come across in sundren without being like level 15 but it's not very feasible either.

When sold in a merchant store the wands are like 1/4 that cost which doesn't make much sense ... if it costs a wizard 6,500 gold for a magic missle wand how would he then be able to sell it (or have another merchant sell it) for 2,000 gold?

Anywho I think the cost of making wands should be lowered ALOT to compare with the prices in the stores. If it costs 2,000 for a wand in the store it should cost comesthing like 1,500 or 1,800 to make the wand. There has to be some room for profit or the whole thing is kind of useless and also makes no IC sense even for NPCs

This has been brought up, questioned, and then had this very suggestion made many times. A brief scan with the search feature brought up a thread that you should read over.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I personally think wand crafting is pretty useless as is -- At least not worth it. However, it has already been brought up and said that it'll eventually be changed for better balance, so we can rest easy expecting a time in the future where it is.

Actually what I got from that post was that the prices were raised HIGHER than the default to stop an exploit.

That doesn't really say it will be lowered anytime soon

The point I was trying to make is that this suggestion was made before, and it was responded to by the Project Leader, Saulus. Of course, it doesn't necessarily mean it'll be lowered, or even raised. It will be changed, for balance.

Take from that response as you will, but know that this suggestion has received response. I'm not sure what more you're looking for.

Edit: No sleep for a day or more does not help my already terrible grammar.

Craft potion needs treatment too, but I believe this is really very low on the priority list, unfortunately. For now its better if people don't take these two feats, in all truth.

It's a lot more complicated then most people realize.

I hear people going on about how there is a single CONSTANT you can change in a script to lower prices. Sure there is. But it doesn't fix the issue that Flame Arrows are imbued at 18th level and Lion's Heart is imbued at 1st level.
Regardless of how we change the math there will still be a caster level problem and thus severe price discrepencies.

            Can it be fixed???
            Yes.
            How can it be fixed???
            Modifications of
            des_crft_spells.2da (1161 lines long)
            iprp_spellcost.2da (239 lines long)
            iprp_spells.2da (707 lines long)

            What does this accomplish???
It would allow us to hardcode the specific prices of a wand.

Does this allow pricing based on caster's level?
No, that would require an entire rewrite of the craft wand system and multiplying the size of those 3 - 2das by 20x. No joke.

            Is it worth it???
You tell me? 2000 lines of modifications, at 1 to 4 changes per line, no line the same as any other, is it?

Why not use the math change like I originally talked about?
Cause it makes it cheaper to craft, but a STORE's buy back cost is greater then the cost then, thus unlimited gold.
STOREs use the 2das not the script to determine pricing. Thus you need the 2000 lines of alterations.

What about using the last option to make crafting cheaper and simply disable selling of wands to shops.

Thats possible right? i mean certain merchant don't accept certain items already would it not stop the possible exploit if you simply couldn't sell wands to anyone but players?

Thats a band aid and not a fix.

And it still doesn't change the fact that a 5th level wizard can craft a wand of flame arrow that is cast at 18th level ability??(4 flame arrows at 5th level??!!?? YIKES!!!!)

Any wizard worth his salt will be running around with an inventory full of low cost 18th caster level spells

See how there is a unbalancing power issue there?

Or the fact that lions heart is cast at first level and that means it last exactly 6 seconds, 3 of which is used in using the wand/potion/scroll.

I can dumb this down to a pretty simple fact, yes we can adjust costs, but that doesn't mean the costs for everything will be proportional without manual editing of every entry. So rather than have an exploit we simply make it costly as it is now.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
