I've looked through all the factions that a player can join and have a couple of ideas. I know that as of right now, factions are kind of in the development phase but I think this has been overlooked. As far as a name goes I haven't thought of one yet, but here is the general idea.
Mercenary Faction- Throughout most of history, mercenaries have filled in levies for city states and kings alike. The prime differance between a mercenary and a city guard, personal army, etc, is a question of loyalty, and of course Mercenaries get paid. This group would hold loyalty to know authority over their own members, however this doesn't mean they take up arms against Sundren or anyone else, they aren't evil, just pragmatic. Whether a king needs levies to kill out his army, a small company to do what his palace guard doesn't have time to do ( say root out that orc nest that his subjects are upset about, or a local mechant needs caravan guards to get his cargo to where it wants to go without being picked apart by bandits, hiring already trained mercenaries would be the answer. As a member of the mercenary guild a person would look at a city guard, religious knight, or order as "those fancy guys" willing to die for their colors, city or king. A mercenary would just as soon live through the job they have, and try their best to survive in truly difficult circumstances.
A guild would help them survive, protect them from persecution and make sure that everyone who takes a contract get's paid.
