  • Suggestion. Concerning Visual Effects.

    Hello Sundren Community,

The server is wonderful, the world is interesting, the players are awesome, and the DMs are terrific. However, there were some things I thought could be improved. I'm not sure if the builders are aware of the VFX Pack, I've been releasing on the vault. Its just a collection of effects I've made myself to help spice areas up. Its got great reviews, and people just love it. 23 Votes now, if I remember correctly. A project I'm very proud of, and I think it would be very benefical to Sundren. I'd also like to extend the olive branch to the developers. I'd love to create some effects specifically for Sundren.

    The pack can be located here;

    Your Sorceress,
    Ashura.

We actually were already aware of it as that thread is more than a few days old.

Some of them don't seem too bad. We have very strict requirements for area performance though and we had to make a custom solution for our particular waterfalls.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Oh, wow. I must of missed that post. I left the waterfall effects alone because I didn't want to step all over Teper and his water pack. He did such a great job. Don't worry, I understand about the performance issues, and you having your own VFX made yourselves. Everyone has thier own tastes. Those waterfalls I saw in Sestra, looked okay. They looked kind of weird when viewing from the side, but in the front, very nice. But anywho, Just thought I'd offer it, since I was playing on the server.

If you're interested in developing on Sundren I'm sure we could talk as there are tailored solutions in VFX we haven't had a chance to address. Feel free to PM me.

Also the waterfalls in Sestra were a balance of performance vs aesthetics to the best of our ability. They could look better, but then we run into performance issues.

To help with performance, there is ways of stretching textures while spawning a few. I've been addressing alot of concerns about the amount of particles in my effects, reducing them and appling different techniques as to not upset frame rates. If you want I can create a new waterfall for you guys, and if you like what you see, and experience... Then we can go from there. Don't want to over step my bounds. =)

Here, I've completed the waterfall. It uses 2 particle systems... the first one spawns the sprinkled drops of falling water. That pfx uses 10 particles. Then the second part spawns a "mist" that flows in a uniform direction. That part spawns 5 particles.

            Using the frame rate...

Now, here is 7 of them.

I hope you like this, I worked on it before bed. I have the erf for these files all ready for you if you decide to use it. Either way, let me know what you all think. By the way, these water falls are rotatable. You can make them spray any direction.

That looks much better. I've sent Saulus a message that I'd be happy to see Sestra's falls improved on by yourself.

The fact is I got rather fed up with trying to strike a balance between visual appeal and performance after several hours of fiddling (made worse by the way you have to pack the pfx in order to create the sef - that's very annoying and Obsidian need to address it).

I wasn't very happy with the falls included in that pack but this one looks much better.

very nicely done.. balancing performance with looks is quite difficult its nice to see we have some one clever figuring things around the performance issues to make NWN2 more pretty
