  • Language Suggestion.

For whatever reasons, Lore allows people to understand a language they don't know. This seems a bit farfetched to me, mainly because the Fighter with 10 intelligence and so forth can understand Abyssal or Celestial just fine. It doesn't seem right to me. I think to understand a given language, you should have it.

This is simply DMFI's default functionality. We have considered making a few changes to it. This may be one of them.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Two cents, I agree. Lore shouldn't allow you to understand a language sometimes, at least in the way it's implemented.

I could see if it actually worked where you only understood some words of a sentence, like (some random letters) drow (more letters) kill.
Similar to someone who knows a few spanish words from their uncle who lived in Mexico or whatever, rather than you understand an entire sentence or nothing.
I suppose this could be harder to impliment, I don't know the mechanics of that or if the effort is worth it. So, as it is now, I'd rather just not understand any of it.

I personally don't think it's bad to have deep founded lore that might see a whole sentence, but the lore check for it is WAYYY too easy. I could see a lore check of DC50, but 10? Get out of here...

I tend to agree, I think a simple solution is just making the lore check far more difficult.

Yepper, i agree to that also. A lore check for knowing "Common" languages would be nice, but 10 is way too low...

Also i think that some languages should be way too hard to even get to know it with a very high lore check..

The languages that comes into mind that are too hard would be: "Drow (It's a special sign language, that few see enough of to even be able to understand), Undercommon (again not very common), Druidic (The secret language of the druids, which are NEVER taught to anyone that is not a druid, and even if you leave the druid's ranks, you forget the language (after FR lore))"

              That's my 2 cents..

I'd say DC 40 would be about right personally.

It will likely be Language dependant in the end.

To me a scholar is required to even understand cross languages they aren't "LEarned" in. So that pretty much means full lore, but I don't see a fighter with full lore as a scholar, and a fighter can hit a DC 40 pretty easy with a few items. Wizards, however, get 23 lore at level 20 + Int Modifier + Items and + spells like legend lore and such. DC50 for a class like this isn't a big issue.

Ohh.. I was thinking it was based on your Skill Modifier, without the diceroll. If it's based with the diceroll.. Maybe a little higher than that then. I'd say only Bards and extremely well read wizards ought to be able to translate most languages.

Agreed. It's the one thing I hate about DMFI... (along with the *flop, *lay down and other emotes not lasting long enough.)
