I realize that there are DM activated feats (guardian of the grove was recently discussed) any chance that paladins and their unholy counterparts could obtain feat to gain a summonable (if admittedly not ridable) mount by operation of IG actions?

Paladin/BlackGuard/BaneGuard Mounts?

You can't ride mounts so don't expect to see them, kind of defeats the purpose. And I don't think Blackguards or Paladins are such a weak class that they really need a summon to give them an even bigger advantage. The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

They're pretty weak. Blackguards more so than Paladins.
But not if you're a genius, like Hano.Pyras: Red Wizard of Thay, High Arcanist of Illusion, Master of the Enclave's Knight Commander.

A well builded Paladin it's like a killing machine, the Paladin has the AB progression of a warrior, a reduced list of divine spells to raise your weapon against evil and undead.
When you build a Paladin you cannot project it for PVP against living creatures, maybe evil, but the strenght of the divine class rests on the slaying of the unholy.
MAYBE if Sundren Maps were huge (Like 60 x 60) in that case MAYBE the mounts must be necesary, but now, all "hot spots" are caves and dungeons, and the horses must be considered a fashion accessory and the PW will increase the Paladin Quota on a 100%, because the mount appears at Lvl 5.

I now officially want to kick the sh-t out of Hano. Thank you for the inspiration, Sean.Pyras: Red Wizard of Thay, High Arcanist of Illusion, Master of the Enclave's Knight Commander.

Ok, I just fought him.
I'll not tell the results, because he might feel uncomfortable with everyone knowing that he lost.
EDIT: Ok, ok, ok... seriously... he kicked my ass.Pyras: Red Wizard of Thay, High Arcanist of Illusion, Master of the Enclave's Knight Commander.

Smite evil shortens the distance other classes get from having either a crapton of feats or really awesome spells gained through leveling.. Paladins don't have anything that scales much other than smite evil..
Their spell level is 1/2 their character level so that's not going to help you much and turn undead? I'm not going to lie - I felt like a King whenever I turned undead the banedead in the spittlefist caves, but it's kind of useless. It'll bump your AC and damage a bit, but nothing compared to what wizards or other classes can do.
When facing non-evil characters though.. Your best scaling ability is useless and you become a fighter with half the capabilities. If you picked the right feats you can defend yourself against them for a few rounds, but they'll still have the upper hand.
Soo.. I guess my point is Paladins are awesomely decent against Evil characters. They fail miserably facing off against non-evil, but if you give them the equipment to run toe-to-toe with non-evil.. They'll surely overpower evil. If any spell were to be given to a paladin it would have to be with great caution. It's no fun getting ass-pounded by Chaotic Neutral guys, but it's no fun fighting evil guys with no challenge.
Assuming that the said evil characters aren't Clerics or Wizards. Those simply win hands down.

Hmm... I don't want to shift the focus of this thread to character builds so I'll try to keep this brief and vague.
1. Believe the DM's and other players when they tell you paladins are not underpowered.
2. It seems like you might be looking at the paladin is a 'vanilla' class.
3. Some of the the most powerful character builds I've seen have been paladins.

Giving them a mount would be awesome aesthetically.. But could cause overpoweredness! They're weak in many areas, but buffing them all around with a spell like that would make them too strong in the few areas they excell in.
Also - It doesn't matter if Paladins are powerful or not. The class is meant to be enjoyed for their challenging RP. Even if the class couldn't beat a level 1 mage with a Holy Avenger I would still play it."Kaeldorn hates players." -Albert Einstein
