  • Mystic Theurge?

Im relatively new to the server, but suffice it to say i've been really impressed with the amount of work that has gone into making the experience here the best possible.

my best memories of D&D was when it was good ol second edition. when vorpal weapons were spoken of in whispers. not something you could add to your inventory.

    that said awesome job.

i had a suggestion though. i liked one particular prestige class from the core 3.5 DM's guide and i was wondering if the dm projects team would consider porting over the mystic theurge prestige class that obsidian left out. it seems to me it would be easy enough to code. the question is if the team would consider it.

has this been thought of? if im just repeating old ideas then lemme know.

MT were considered for a prc for a while but got left on the cutting room floor by Obsidian along with the riding mounts. It's a shame. They would have been probably the first prc I would have tried.

I also think this could be cool to add.

However, balance has to be considered.

On the Wizards forums, anyone who knows anything about class balance knows that MT sucks in that department in your standard game of DnD. You are (at best) a full spell level behind in two spellcasting classes. You are (at worst) a liability to your party.

However, Sundren is not a standard game of DnD. Spells have LOTS of power here, and even being behind by a full spell level could be worth it to have almost double the spells per day of other casters.

If you're creative, you can already simulate a Mystic Theurge by multiclassing well enough - but maybe not with 15 level caps.

I'm sure the DM's would consider this though, as they seem to love adding new content and whatnot. 3 custom PRC's already, so why not more, right?

theres a file on the NW vault that unlocks the Mystic Theurge for you.

The reason it was not implemented is because they couldnt get the spells to be given out properly at each level, although there are work arounds to it.

I would love to see this class aswell, thats why I know a bit about it.

Refresh my memory? Is that the PRC that gives you spell levels in both divine and arcane AT THE SAME TIME?

If so... *snorts and chuckles at the sheer number of MT's there would be on Sundren*
            If not, please update me.

There are disadvantages to it, I believe, but yeah. You get both.

Unfortunately it's really difficult to script a class like this properly into the game, though I have to say this is a PrC I wouldn't mind seeing in Sundren in the future.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Wow, I never knew people posted PRC's and stuff on there, granted I never looked at that, I may have to take a look at some of those, thanks.

You could simulate this a bit with a mix of cleric and wizard levels, though I know this would be a bit of a nerf without being able to share spellcasting levels between them. In the end you are just talking about optimizing, no reason you can't make a similar character, he just won't be as effective.

yep, its the PRC that gives you +1 level to existing arcane AND divine spell casting class. With the requirements that you
                        A) be able to cast second level spells in both classes.
                        B) have knowledge arcana and religon at rank 6 (this can be changed to (spellcraft and lore)

So a Wizard 3/Druid 3/Mystic Theurge 9 would act as a Wizard 12/Druid 12 (with all associated spells and spell slots and effective caster level included).

as far as balancing goes, as you can see the class has its drawbacks. Hes still on 6th level spells when he should be on 8th by the time he hits the level 15 cap.

as far as scripting goes. i know im not skilled enough to comment, but isn't all the code written already? the hak packs above could serve as a template for the dev team to design their own. i dunno if theyd work with Every Divine (favored soul, Druid, Paladin, Ranger) and arcane (sorcerer and wizard) class.

And if by some chance it is not possible to do that, there is no other benifits to the class other than the pluses to two different casting classes. Couldn't it be easy enough to just cut and paste from other classes that include those abilities already? like Stormlord's and Arcane Scholar's +caster level benifits. but just in one prestige class.

Theoretically it should work (with a couple of bugs but those could be ironed out im sure).

Just because they CAN do it, don't mean they should. I can imagine some uber builds with that PrC.

Nah, pure Wizard would win without a contest. 15 levels isn't enough for a Theurge to be powerbuilt. Not for PvP, at least. It would kill PvM though.

MT has always been one of those classes which looks amazing, but when you really start to play one you realize just how horribly underpowered it is. First lets try to get our MT to level six. That is Mage 3, Cleric 3. Just those first six levels are hard enough due to the fact that wearing armour is out of the picture if you want to cast mage spells, other then buffs (Which won't last long at level 3 casting), . . . . . .actually I'm not even going to get into the weaknesses of a MT, just go out on a limb and trust me on this one =P
