I think it would be nice if the updater did a check every time you ran it. I had a problem earlier with some areas and after I was told to remove 2 files (also removed the ones I had problems with which, so a total of 4 files), but when I ran the updater after, I have like 15 files to download. I am sure that most of you have high-speed net, so it probably is not as much of a problem for you, but for those of us on dial-up, if we get disconnected that can cause problems downloading (like I experienced earlier). I think in general it is a good idea anyway, something simple just to make sure files match and are all present. Of course, since I do not know how to do it I can not say that it is simple, but am sure you get the point.

I think it does, actually. I think it gets a list of MD5 hashes from the internet, checks it against the files you have, and downloads files that don't match or don't exist. However, it gets tedious if this is done every time the updater is run, so I believe a list of all the MD5 hashes calculated is created after the first run.

I think the problem you experienced was that the MD5 hashes of your files were not the same as the ones recorded in this separate file, which is why you had to force the program recalculate them, by deleting the 2 files (the 2 corrupt ones would probably have been re-downloaded anyway, even if you had not deleted them). I believe the Updater FAQ says something along these lines, so provided people read that, there shouldn't be any problems.

Of course, I'm likely to be wrong, as I have no idea how the updater works.

It didn't do that for me
Once I deleted the two files it went back through and completed the files that were incomplete from before when I was disconnected. It might be there, but might not be working properly or something. I would imagine it would just need a list of files, then to do a comparative check for each then update as needed.

No, I think it only checks for them if those two files you deleted don't exist.

And you might find it laggy if you try to play on dial-up.

Try deleting your Sundren.state and your Sundren.ver within your My Docs/NwN2 folder, this will recheck and redownload the things that need to be downloaded. If you have a problem with files needing to be replaced, this method should scan and replace them, provided you delete the corrupted or unfinished files.

You shouldn't even be using dialup with NWN2, you'll slow down the server and everyone else on it.

Sadly enough, I do have cable, but my dial-up is more reliable (between my router having been soaked by my Saint Bernard drooling on it and constant line noise and such). I do not really have much lag at all. At most, it may take me a slightly long time to load an area, but I doubt it. Either way I can not win, both I get disconnected with from time to time. I have max speed on cable (which is 3mb for this area) and I do get anywhere near 1mb )probably cause the signal is about dead by the time it gets to my house). In either case, unless NWN2 severely back-tracked in technology, the problem withlow speed connections slowing down servers and/or other players was fixed at least 4+ years ago with the new engines.

Actually, any slow internet connection does slow down the server. In fact this is part of the major reason for crashes and instability, it's almost always attributed to either a bad connection or slow internet. NWN2 uses UDP which is a connectionless protocol, it uses less bandwidth but the trade off is instability, and it's bandwidth usage is only marginally less than the traditional TCP.

The server is largely capped by the slowest connection active... even on the NWN2 box it says right under the requirements "Broadband connection required". There's a very good reason for this, it's that NWN2 wasn't designed to be run on dialup. It may work, but it's not very pretty and it certainly affects all other clients on the server.

Is this why it seems like the server is crashing more often now?

It could very likely be a contributing factor.
