  • Flavorful Deaths

I tried to code something like this before, but my scripting knowledge (and patience) is only shin-deep.

Sundren seems to be a place where flavor text is appreciated. Go into the archer shop, and the ranger speaks with the merchant in a little script. Things like this bring the world to life more than the built-in video game engine does.

What about adding "special death text" to critters when they die? Concatenate the monster name with the killer name, figure out what they were killed by, and give floaty text, like, "Jo-Jo slits the Mossmeet Goblin's artery, spraying blood everywhere." Maybe that's too graphic, but you get the idea. And no, not on every death, that would be too much spam. But maybe 1 / 15 deaths? 1/20?

The challenge I ran into was determining what damage type killed the monster. But, if the wonderful scripters here could figure it out, I'd be happy to contribute the text I've compiled from some Rolemaster crit tables for the special death text.

Oooh, I love this idea! Maybe it happens when you kill something on a crit, or 1/15 death inducing crits.

Doing things like this while fun, in the end only can create performance concerns as it's simply extra overhead for every creature death that has to be processed.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

My computer used to poop something nasty when there was too much floating text on the screen.
