  • re: Currency - gold or?

Ok, I'm a little confused about the currency in Sundren, and how it relates to the amount of money you have as a character.
The NWN2 money system takes Gold coins as the prime currency, and normally, what money you have in your inventory is in gold. Is this true for Sundren as well? For instance, when you play cards, he asks if you want to bet 1 or 10 gp..

The following is posted on the forum:

A gold coin in Sundren is called a stag, a circular disc wrought in gold with varying images imprinted every few years. The name 'stag' caught on with one particularly popular batch bearing the depiction of a white stag thought native to Sundren. The gold stag itself bears a certain degree of prestige, as most commoners do not see many gold coins throughout their lifetime.
So here we have established that the gold coin is quite rare, at least for normal commoners. Now, IF the currency in you inventory is also gold in Sundren, it doesn't make any sense to me... You start with 1000 gold? And if you want to buy anything, it costs at least 1 gold?

I'm inclined to believe that it's an error in the script for the card game, and it should have been irons instead, can someone clarify?

Crazy inflation. Money will always be wonky in Persistent Worlds for these two reasons.

    1) There's no system for copper / silver / AND gold

    2) People farm.
"Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin -- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man."

        Money is simply money.

Personally, I divide it down by myself, using the EverQuest currency moniker system.

For me, Stag = General Term for Money (IE, Dollars)

        1 Stag = Equivalent to 1 Copper
10 Stags = Equivalent to 1 Silver, or 10 Coppers
        100 Stags = Equivalent to 1 Gold, or 10 Silvers/100 Coppers
        1000 Stags = Equivalent to 1 Platinum, or 10 Golds/100 Silvers/1000 Coppers

That's not an official response in any way, but is the way I personally see the system for ease of my economic conscience.

Then maybe the thread I quoted above needs a revision? http://www.sundren.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1599

That thread is wrong. We overlooked it mostly.

1 Gold is about 1 Us Dollar in Sundren. This is mostly because gold is the lowest value we can represent. So, if you want a house, it's thousands of gold. Mansion? Probably millions.

Since coins are bloody heavy, we introduced RP concepts such as trade bars, or Waukeen Notes (Essentially Checks), and some people use gems.

Why is this a suggestion? I don't see one anywhere.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Yes it was a general suggestion that the consistency (including the above thread) concerning Sundren currency was looked at, because what I read there and in game was somehow inconsistent...

I brought up this issue once, and I simply decided to think of the number in my inventory as Silvers. It's not unreasonable for adventurers to have hundreds of gold, especially considering those with Characters of up to 5th level.

It's just a personal preference. I find it silly when a Monk who has minimal need for gold runs around with 700 of it in his pocket while the Commoners surrounding him make a tenth of that in a year's harvest.
