  • Warp Stones

I looked on the Dead Horse list and also did a search of the forum and didn't get any hits, so here goes.

Is there a way we could have warp points spread throughout the realm that you can click on and collect warp stones to place in your inventory and then have maybe a warp globe that you can purchase, of course for a large cost, and have these globes usable to warp to the points?

Say in the center of a couple temples and maybe one or two towns, you have a warp point that if you click on it, it gives you a stone that is attuned to the warp point. Then, you have one or more stores sell warp globes that give you the ability to click on said globe and warp to whatever warp points you have stones for.

This may really help when you are in the middle of the second level of necro or lizards or up the mountain and you crash, get tired of crashing or just tired, and leave the game. When you warp back in the next day, you are in the middle of bad, bad stuff and usually die unless you can run really fast or hide or go invisible.

Anyway, just a suggestion and I am not sure if you can do this in NWN2.

Honestly I already think people can teleport around already far too easily using the world map. This takes away all incentive to actually explore or travel.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

That will create a whole set of jobs for warp technicians!

I'm actually not crazy about the idea. If this were just a grind server it'd be one thing, but travelling is part of ... well travelling. I've met many people or come across things I would have missed (even unannounced DM events) if I took a jaunt through the ether to get to my destination.

Granted, not everyone will need to use them, so part of that point is moot. I just think it's trying to make something overly convenient that doesn't necessarily call for it.

As far as logging in to a dungeon, it's good to carry a few potions of invisibility. That way you can drink it in the waiting room, or immediately after diving back into the viper's nest.

This isn't a grind server? The players have sure fooled me!

I agree with Saulus, if you worry about crashing, don't go into a dungeon.

I'm guilty of this. I've only created a couple of test characters to date, and have been more interested in hitting the rp-oriented map points (and continguous areas) than exploring, since the initial goal was to talk to people and/or observe roleplay.

When I settle in with a full time character, my hopeful expectation is that some of the more interesting adventure areas will be a bit of a challenge to get to and from. The idea of warp stones seems to undermine that, and I'd rather not see them.

If you really need a helping hand, use the DM channel and explain what your situation is.

Instead of that, how about this:

People could order a teleportation object from the Thayan Enclave. They have to specify a specific location for the object to teleport to. Give it a limited amount of charges, say 10 or so, requiring repeat purchases if the person uses it often.

At best I could see an emergency magical item that has a one time use to teleport to Sundren City. It would be very expensive as well.

I've been grinding my teeth alot, maybe that's what you're thinking of.

And yes I've done alot of actual grinding to get where I am, but you know I've never shirked rp for it. Even while fighting.

Its not an idea to me that captures the spirit of the FR.

What I would like to see is an opton on loading to where you go to. Last save point as one and maybe Sundren city as another. That way if there is a server crash you wont jump into a dungeon all alone and find the rest of the group has not come back in yet.

If you don't have the spell memorised, always always always carry invisibility potions. That is all.

On second thought, with the world transitions, it probably isn't needed, so I rescind my suggestion. The NWN1 server I played on had warp locations because some areas could take you a couple hours to get to (it was a very large world) and they didn't have world transitions, so you couldn't just bypass the 10-20 areas between you and the next town or dungeon.

And this post was not so that people could just warp to an area quickly and beat everyone to loot or grind. The stones wouldn't send you to a grinding area anyway, but maybe a temple. I really wanted to suggest maybe a failsafe incase of emergencies, maybe a one time shot that costs a lot of money would probably be better. But then again, with a failsafe, then people will even be more bold and just use it right before they are going to die in a place they probably shouldn't be in anyway.

So again, I rescind this suggestion.

I'll just use Vekin's words to express my opinion, because they are spot on.
It's not remotely difficult to code in and just a matter of placing a few additionnal waypoints around the module, a conversation file and a few lines of code. But what I feel it creates is this sort Diablo feel where everyone is out there to level up on their own, which is against the spirit of making people meet up, get in conflict and have great roleplay.

Also, good alternatives to Invisibility Potions are Haste Spells or high Hide/Move Silently skills.
