They're in there. And they also cast dispel too, the AI isn't all that great so vampiric touch tends to be the major casting. Might end up redoing some of this..
I've seen the vampiric touch and plenty of dispels, but no death magic since the previous incarnation of the server...
Anway, back on topic! All the people who've posted about groups are dead right. There are plenty of ways to be useful other than actually killing stuff, and providing some background RP while fights are underway is most certainly the best!
In the french version of Baldur's Gate 1, some innkeepers had a voiceset which translates precisely to:
"My inn is just as clean as an elf's ass!"
(Aren't we talking about proper elves?)
That was the best french-traduced game I played in my whole life. Imoen's voice was unbelievably fitting considering how she's supposed to an annoying *meep*
I never expect bards to do much in the way of killing, for example, but they can sure make a party alot stronger with their music.
Bards can do tons in the way of killing, if they put their mind to it. I mean, I think we're all agreed here that Val kicks ass
Plus he gives everyone flame + bless weapon which is an automatic 2d6 + 1d8 damage against undead
No no, it's okay Rhifox. Stop trying to make me feel useful
Seriously though, I do understand the differences between classes, their relative strengths and weaknesses as well as their typical primary uses. None of that bothers me. If I wanted to play a mage, I'd play one.
My point was that even if you're not dealing out alot of the damage, there are other things to be done. Especially if you're not busy queuing spells and watching cooldown timers.
I know how you feel about the combat aspect of the game, there's not much to be done about that. But, I would only consider someone to be leeching if they're literally not doing anything and just standing away from combat watching it happen without saying a word or lifting a finger.
Hell, I'll slip on the dungeon steps, get zombie gore in my mouth, get my arm caught in a door, get lost...these things have a tendancy to occur and can really add a little something to breaking the monotony and help to turn the trip into something character driven rather than experience driven.
It also gives the excursion a focal point to refer back to. Rather then "Remember Necropolis trip #564, when we killed some more zombies?" You might say: "Remember when I tried to barricade the doors out of the lower crypts?"
It's really the only reason Sigrun still patrols the Viridale every day. It's character driven.
DMs always give out experience after events, but some DMs give out more, others give out less, some give out only to the 'primary players' of an event. In addition, DMs also reward good RP if they are actively watching.
But I'd agree, don't bother grinding so much if you have trouble finding a group. RP is more fun by far. Although I have to say I rarely see much RP XP, even after events.
Surprsed you say that, I have always found the DMs give out experience after events, you can even get experience for picking the right god or skills that fit in with your character.
Hmmm. I think I know how that particular situation feels partying with you ... and this comes from a Ranger that dual weilds battleaxes and has 5 attacks a round.
In the end, 7 overlapping flame walls tend to make me look absolutely useless.
Yeah, but getting to the point where I could do that required 10 levels of the leeching I've mentioned in my previous posts, due to playing a class that only becomes really useful at level 10+.
Well, personally I think the system kind of breaks down after a certain level. I mean there is a big difference between a level 2 and a level 6, but there isn't so much difference between a level 12 and a level 16, unless they are a 9 level caster class. And from experience, the majority of difference between characters still comes from equipment, not levels. That is greatly limited here, I believe, but even still, equipment plays a much bigger role than levels.
I'd say that the range should probably be extended after a certain level, and possibly do a bit of averaging also, so say three level 10s and a level 15 counts maybe as a level 13 or 14 for XP purposes.
But I'd agree, don't bother grinding so much if you have trouble finding a group. RP is more fun by far. Although I have to say I rarely see much RP XP, even after events.
