It's all about party dynamic, and I try to fill the martial gaps where needed. Occasionally there are no such gaps so I just swing at anything that moves, provide flanking or go on heal pack duty.

Everyone can find something useful to do, even if it's just drawing enemies or offering good rp.
yeah but...can 7 overlapping flame walls punch an announcer? huh? huh?

    Quoted for Truth.

    RP > *

People who have the agenda "Look, I'm trying to level as fast as possible" may not understand that. But if you're RP'ing well, you may very well be the difference between a sighing and groaning while grinding and a completely exciting run through a dungeon.

You could always pay a caster to cast some spells on you, then you can go and exact some justice on those monsters that give you a hard time.

Otherwise, hang out around town(s). if you RP smart, those rewards especially at lvl 6 are damn need godly.

...or you can come to some of my fishing spots and floss philopshical with me and catch fish.

They're in there. And they also cast dispel too, the AI isn't all that great so vampiric touch tends to be the major casting. Might end up redoing some of this.

I can say that I don't care if people hang off each other. I never expect bards to do much in the way of killing, for example, but they can sure make a party alot stronger with their music.

Like Saulus said, the system isn't going to change, there might be a couple tweaks, but it's pretty much how it's going to be.

The basic premise of most if not all fantasy stories are groups. You have a group of characters that get together and try to defeat some evil. Most of the time you don't read a fantasy book and have one guy go out to defeat the evil lord. It is almost always a group, and a group that complements each other.

That is one of the reasons, I believe, that the xp system is the way it is and it is very, very good if you have a party of 3 to 5. Try and cultivate some friends on Sundren and some play times and hang out with them. If not that, then create an alternate character that can tank and run around and have fun until your friends come online.

Yes, I read the tips. Wards last 3 min, rest timer at 10min. Buffed AC is 18. My AB is +3. This is at level six. And yes, I know those stats look like goblins. Which is why they kill me.
    What class are you?

But Aux nailed the heart of the issue on the head. I want to feel some what useful and get involved. I am vehemometly against simply leeching XP and standing there. Such things are for a... a... Red Wizard of Thay to do or something
By leeching, I don't mean just standing around doing nothing. I mean playing it safe and be willing to accept that you're pretty much doing absolutely nothing for the party. Leeching can be defined as shooting a few arrows at a mob that do 4-8 points of damage each while the fighter types are critting for 50+ and have two attacks per round. If you're a caster type, you can also buff the fighter types, allowing them to kill things even easier than they are already. And run around healing people with healing kits.

It's very, very annoying, yes. But unfortunately, classes are not balanced and quite a few of us are stuck in the back feeling like we aren't contributing at all until level 10+.

right... my advice is, that, if u don't want to get completely pwnd, take one level of fighter: Sion did that and look where it got him! AB +9 and AC 30... at lev 4! (admittedly n00b rest rules apply which help a lot )

If you can't be bothered to do that, or leech like everyone suggests, then your only option is to buy some wands off Val

I'll just keep playing as I do. Trying to be helpful in a party and often being rewarded with a quick death.

My original post was to point out that 0xp monsters aren't aways "Effortless" and can easily kill some chars. By the DMs own logic means that fighting monsters that can easily kill you is a learning experience.
This thought wasn't well recieved. I thank all the helpful posters.

Heh. Try to get some RP XP from hanging around in the crossroads, I doubt the high levels'll be leveling up any further for now, if you're trying to catch up to them. Atleast, not rapidly quick, as they around 4xp per a kill.

Either in parties with monsters that kill me in one bad round or soloing the easiest monsters on the server, which still kill me.

The staff must hate me. All my posts get locked...

I have the same problem, and my char isnt low level... yes it means hanging at the back as has been said... and yes it can be frustrating when you want to get involved. But the interaction with pc's and dm's (well some of them) can be rewarding.

If you dont like it, go play WoW.. cos DnD is rubbish and WoW is much better in so many ways apparently

Quite frankly, I am fully behind Rhifox on this one. As Roger the only way I could get some reasonnable XP from level 5 to 8 was to hang at the back of some Necropolis group and leech XP, because I take aeons to take down anything with lots of HP or immunity to sneak attack (I hit for 4-10 where most combat-capable warriors go for 15-20 at my level, Dex fighter does that to you).

Being in a party tends to net me -more- xp much more quickly, not even mentionning that it's just plain funnier to RP around with people than go grind by yourself in some dark dungeon corner. DMs also seem to like putting up situations/traps/quests for small groups wandering in dungeons, well it happened to me several times at least. Overall I don't think the XP system and monster difficulty encourages soloing.

I'm sure there's a number of frustrated people going "They are too hard! It's unbalanced!" The truth of the matter is dungeons on Sundren can be hard, thankfully we don't have heavy XP deductions, hell you can't even lose a level. So yes, creatures will be tough, yes you'll need a good party to do so.

There are some gaps in the level range for dungeons right now, but dungeons take a long time to make... rest assured we have more than a few on the drawing board for upcoming updates.

When you're in parties, just stay away from the monsters. Stay in the back, and try not to get aggro. The monsters that can kill you in one round can only kill you in one round if they decide to attack you.

And again, if you really can't get exp from grinding, then just concentrate on RPing.

I've read what you've said, but you don't seem to have read my post, where I gave out plenty of advice on how to advance as a weaker class. No one hates you, it's just that while exp gaining can seem rough, there are plenty of ways around it, which don't require changing the system.
