  • Commoner classes/commoner RP idea

I had a look, couldn't see this anyware, so here it goes.
For me, the whole point of an RP server is, of course, to act in-charactor, as we all do.
One thing, however, which is predominant in this server (No bad thing for many of course) is the large percentage of combat and battles/ creature slaughterhouses and the like, which most players, I guess, do spend some time in from one time to the other.

Sorry, I must be rambling. I will get to the point.
I myself have always liked the idea of Roleplaying a charactor that was not combat related at all. In truth, I have always wanted to roleplay being a farmer, for example, or a butler, or a cook. None of which require any combat, or would want any combat, in their lives at all.
This idea was once implemented in the last server i was in. They created a custom, commoner class. The principal was that this class did not have any special feats or abilities at all, but could just weild the basic weapons of any man or woman, say a dagger, sickle and the like. This class was only a one level class: you dont advance as a comonner of course, and what it enabled me to do on the last server was spend the whole life of that PC in the towns, interacting with other PCs, trying to buy land to grow crops, being offered chances to serve the wine at certain ceremonies held by the factions on the server, and eventually become engrossed in his own cooking, to finally begin planning a life work of building his very own restaurant.
Now, of course, a PC like that would never be involved with much combat at all, apart from the cutting of the crops in a harvest, so the charactor was played....as a very timid, shy, not very outgoing, but good-intented person.
Gods...i keep rambling. My point is this is the sort of charactor I like to play. Would anyone think this was a good idea on this server? I only ask as, from what i have seen (Although I havent seen everything, I am, of course, a n00b still ) there is not much of a niche for a player like that.

Yes, plus the server would be suitable for this type of RP

On this server? Meh, not much people hang around town, unfortunately. I'm not sure, somone like that wouldn't be out much often, and most people hang out in the crossroads.. Of course, maybe you could be a farmer? N then you'd probably get alot of RP, If you were like hired or something to manage the farm in the crossroads, as most people hang out there.

I don't see why you'd need commoner class. Just play a fighter or rogue and don't level up.

Unnecessary amount of work on the devs to create a commoner class.

If you want to RP a farmer, then RP a farmer. Class has nothing to do with your RP despite how much DnD tries to force them down your throat. Just take the classes that best give the skills you want for your character (for instance, the Red Wizard Masters that the DMs use have levels of Arcane Scholar. Not because they are actually Arcane Scholars, but because the class itself is the closest thing to Archmage).

D&D is about using your imagination. So, use it. We're not going to add useless crap which only one or two people will ever use.

Just make a Rogue or something and RP it out. There's already a Seamstress on the server who has done something very similar to this (and is an awesome character).

The commoner class isnt the main question. I was wondering if simply RPing a PC of that type would be a good idea on this server.

Do you think its a good idea? If you do, just do it. If it doesnt work out then it doesnt matter does it- if its not about the leveling and xp but about rp and interaction?

A butcher? That would have every paladin picketing outside his/her shop saying something like. "I will not let thee sell the corpses of the fallen animals! It's not just!" *snickers*

On a lighter note...I'm just a cook, I just happen to be able to call lightning. I also do a lot of fishing, so if you see me cook crawfish gumbo, you better believe I actually went and caught some crawfish.

Haven't caught any old boots or body parts yet which is probably good.

Unfortunately as mentioned earlier not enough people hang out in enough places besides the places that tend to have the most traffic. Otherwise I'm sure there'd be tons of bartenders and courtesans...oh wait, we have a few of them already.
