  • Spear

hey folks this has been on my mind for a bit and wanted to throw it at the powers that be.... bare in mind I expect it low priority but I wanted to mention it.

throughout history ( romans, Vikings, Europe in the dark ages ect) the spear was used hand in hand with a shield . any chance anyone eles thinks it could be used as a one handed weapon without the use of monkey grip? or make a single handed spear for thrusting with shield and long spear for 2 hand use?

    thoughts?

I like the idea. You don't even have to go back that far. Even in recent games like Dark Souls/Bloodborne that employ weapon+defense combinations like that, it's often the damage output of the spear that's knocked down considerably to allow for the usage of the shield, compared to going 2-handed will full crazy damage. Whether that can be codified into NWN is a different issue altogether.

Not a bad suggestion, but also not going to happen. Take Monkey Grip, and enjoy the greatly extended range we've put in place for them. Take Cleave for additional lolz.

I feel like this is a common suggestion on most servers, and usually what staff says is that designing a whole new weapon type is a TON of work so I imagine it's not worth the time.

Why they didn't have shortspear and long spear like in ToEE is beyond me. And spiked chains, they are awesome

Worth noting; DnD does in fact differentiate short and long spears anyways.

The short spear being a 1d6 x2 weapon. (It was the one you're supposed to use with a shield).

I'd rather take the x3 crit at the cost of having -2 AB when I'm using it with a shield. It's already the best simple weapon, on par with martial weapons in fact save being a two handed weapon.

I've never got the hate Spear's get. Especially with a range buff.

Well if spear (long/short) was how it is in regular 3.5rules I don't think anyone would have any gripe over it. I personally wouldn't lol. That being said to rectify obsidians oversight would be an obscene amount of work. I will just ignore spears as they are, halbards are nice

Did Halberd get this sort of buff btw?

Edit; tested it out myself, pretty near.

Every two-handed weapon received a range increase a while back.

One of the key differences between NWN2 and PnP is how it handles weapon sizes. In NWN2 each weapon only comes in one size, and a creature's size determines whether they can use it or not. In PnP, there are small, medium and large versions of weapons, with the smaller version dealing less damage and the larger dealing more.

The difference between a halfling using a 1d6 medium-sized shortsword or a 1d6 small-sized longsword is semantic. It's just a shame that they can't use spears or staffs at all.

Every two-hand weapons? Or just the polearms? Do you get a range increase with a scimitar or greatsword as well?

Range was increased for all two-handed (large) weapons, the increase varying by weapon.
