I love the idea of having rivals. I think there are lots of really good opportunities out there to start up character rivalry over too. I suppose it is just a matter of lining up play styles. Some people only see a certain character type as "rival" material. And that is not a bad thing. I mean, in the end, we all want to be excited by the RP we are doing. Maybe it would be helpful if people just kind of came out and said what they feel like their vision of a rival is.

Are people looking for that,in your face, attitude? Do you want subtle digs? What about PVP or even RP scuffles? The one thing I see a lot of is PR wars. How do we escalate past that and not have PVP grudge fests?

I, for one, can't see why we just can't all get along without fighting. You've never seen any of my characters get antagonistic, after all.
      Characters:
Peridan Twilight, one-eyed dog of the Legion, deceased.
Daniel Nobody, adventurer and part time problem solver.

      [DM] Poltergeist :
If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge an intermediate deity's unbridled fury.

.... See, I'm very certain that this is being facetious.

Moral of thread: Seek to promote friendly OOC relationships with your IC enemies. Nothing makes an RP rivalry like being able to laugh and joke about it in tells after an encounter. It also helps ensure any rivalry formed can persist and on a potentially grander scale.

The first time I played a character who fought and miraculously defeated Clive the bogeyman (this was years ago), we both spent the next five minutes complimenting one another and laughing over the surprise that was my victory.

He beat me soundly the next time, to equally great OOC effect. While it didn't stir a legendary arch-nemesis relationship, it made each encounter something to look forward to, as I knew him to be a level-headed player who enjoyed raving about Bane while I spat out my own deities' ethos before the stabby-stab. And for as long as I had that character in play, we naturally gravitated towards one another to further enjoy said rivalry.

If someone is diametrically opposed to your character, remember to thank them later for any clashing viewpoints the two of you may express IC. Arguments (and gratuitous pixel violence) are the spice of life.

"Destruction" buddy, not harm, why waste a good healing spell on a enemy.

I find the best rivals interactions end in: verbal sparing, attempting to coerce or compromise your foe in some fashion, allowing them to escape to carry the news of your badassness to others or running away yourself.
Fight when cornered or the odds are in your favor. What would a vampire do?

Peridan was a great rival for the entire black hand faction. Probably the least black and white rival we have had besides a hand full of internal conflicts.
