  • cheapside encounters?

just a thought i had. has it ever been considered to have random encounters within the cheapside? for example muggers and thugs? maybe faction aligned as in who gets attacked and who dosnt? nothing horrible. but it might make for an interesting atmosphere..

    just a thought.

Maybe scatter some low level night's edge in tucked away corners of the district?

I think it's a good suggestion as well! For as much time Dust has spent in Cheapside recently () I've noticed that only the seldom and random passer-by is usually someone just starting out.

I think while it would be great to add to the atmosphere in general, maybe a compromise is needed for those lower levels who don't want to die (just yet). What Wangxiuming said makes sense. Stay on the main "way" in Cheapside and you can stroll on through. Decide to "check out" the back alleys and near the waterfront and an encounter can be triggered.

I know it may be a bit complicated but could it be scripted for an encounter where you can either offer "tribute/payment" or "intimidate" Night's Edge in conversation? That way noobies don't HAVE to necessarily risk life and limb. But if they want to try and get brave or mouth off, an imminent attack is underway.

Wish I knew how to script these, I'd help if the idea passed through.

my thoughts with the suggestion was something survivable for low levels. obviously I don't want I just killing new players.. but my thoughts where for some of the "patrons" of a local pub may have enough of respect from the local thugs that they are left alone. that all said I love the idea of encounters off the common paths.

To answer your question yes it has been considered but we have no spawn system so the end result is we can't do them the way we would want (in terms of not always being active etc).
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

I guess I was thinking of something like the cartel tunnels beneath aquar.

(( this wasn't a counter point saulus. just wanted you too see where the idea came from. im cool with your answer.))

Just a thought of my own to add to the discussion:

You could always roll up a low-level bandit or back-alley brigand yourself? If you get a few friends to join you, you could have a whole gaggle of gangsters.

Sure, you guys would be smears on the sidewalk if an epic strolled in and decided to PVP you, but I've never seen that sort of behavior out of this server's player base. On the contrary, most of the players here seem to give roleplay greater emphasis than mechanical power differentials.

I mean, it's rarely the most powerful characters who wind up being the most memorable characters anyway, right? -- A down-to-earth, but well-played, slummer might help draw more attention to the city and the district itself. That's certainly been my experience with Illuminated's "Dust" character.

This is just a personal opinion, but in that opinion, the best way to add flavor to any map is to go there and stay as in-character as possible. Whether you're alone or with friends, it's a sure recipe for magic.

For what it's worth, I agree myself. Putting Thresh in the Viridale as a kind woman that wards those that enter the woods time to time had a habit of occasionally drawing great crowds to a rather odd spot. Or asking them news of the world outside, or just sharing tea and wisdom. It helps a area breathe.

We do keep a pretty good bunch around here, don't we?

That we do. I'm hard pressed to find a similar community before or since.
But please, keep one thing in mind for me. What have you become when even nightmares fear you?
