I came to an odd realization last night with Requium, that Scam artists are incredibly rare on Sundren, and are effectively impossible. I'm not entirely sure if its that no one wants to play them, or that they can't play them, or a self-feeding problem. However, a scam relies on the target having a different understanding of the properties of the good or service in question than the avtual value. As it stands, if one person has identified an item, everyone can see what it is, and thus we come to the potential improvement.
Suggestion: Unidentify Item ability
Who is Affected: Few individuals, namely unethical merchants, con-artist types, victims of such who lack sufficient appraise or lore.
Difficulty of Implementation: unknown, tying ability to remove 'identified' flag from items
Summary: My suggestion is the inclusion of an ability that unidentifies items. As it stands, the game effectively assumes that everyone who trades an item explains exactly what that item does, and that the information is communicable with a glance. My proposed suggestion is that, with the click of a button, you can simply hand someone an item that they are not guaranteed to know what it does - though characters sufficiently trained in such would be capable of appraising said during the transaction and recognize fakes. I foresee that this would allow for greater degrees of potential RP, with the role of item appraisal being a larger factor in interactions and promoting more inter-character networking between merchants (both ethical and unethical), customers, and third-party appraisal experts.
I predict that this may be possible to impliment by using an ability or script similar to the DM-power that toggles the 'Identified[_]' flag on the item to False. This being Obsidian, who knows.
Questions, comments, critique, concerns?
Cheers,
Kit
