It it were not for technical issues that make dying more likely - lag, client crashes, etc., I'd agree that permadeath might be spicy.
Once the major tech issues stabilize, I'd support a middle ground: losing a level on death, unless resurrected. Resurrection wouldn't cost you any experience. Raise dead would put you at mid point of previous level. Respawn would put you at beginning of previous level.
You don't entirely lose the character, but you do lose character strength and it comports with D&D rules more closely. Also allows for some nice role play for death 'draining' you like it should and it would act as a deterrent to engaging in overly risky fights, PvP or PvE.
