  • Trapfinding for Other Classes

I've always found it odd that Trapfinding is ONLY for rogues. There are other classes out there which excel at setting traps, but only one that can disable them. But I could see the skills having synergy.

What about adding this ability, or making it a selectable feat, for rangers and certain PRCs?

I would think that trap finding would be right up a ranger's alley. But, at the same time, I think a rogue should move faster in stealth.

All the same, can you not just sink skill points into search and disable device?

You can sink points into disable device, but you MUST have Trapfinding to disable a trap of DC 20+. Most traps are going to be at that level.

I was going to post a question, but realized PL had answered it moments beforehand. I'm presuming that the suggestion is to enable full ranger progression without a dip into rogue, which would provide the same benefit at the cost of a level?

I think that's your answer in itself. I'm of the opinion that classes has certain features unique to them for a reason. Paladins can smite evil, Clerics can turn undead, and rogues can disable traps better than any others.

There isn't a pressing need to give anyone else the rogue's ability to disable traps above a DC 20, because they're perfectly capable of disabling ones under a DC 20 and aren't trap specialists. If you really want to specialize in disabling traps, then take a level in rogue.

I see no reason to make rogues even more difficult to play. As it stands, most people just run through traps.

I'd rather give rangers an ability that gives them x traps/day based on level. It's trap crafting that's the real culprit here imo.

Now that there are no favoured classes it's easy to take a level in Rogue. You delay your awesome epic feat but gain trap recovery...unlimited free traps and a cool specialty that makes you very useful in a party (assuming this inspiring trend of scarier and higher DC traps continues).
