Because they needed a simple way to quantify Rank into points without taking up DM time to decide who gets promoted and who doesn't?

I would guess that the word "Reputation" was arbitrarily chosen because it intuitively makes sense to most people. Think of it as your "Standing" instead if it makes more sense

Replace the word reputation with 'rank points' does this make you feel better?

All kidding aside, it's just a word to measure points for ranking. It could be called banana points for all I care.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Only if we could implement banana in the rep titles.

No matter what you call it. It is still a little odd, but I can see why you did it. Suspension of disbelief and all that for a game. Suppose an auto advance system is not so bad if it cuts off at the small group leadership level.

Especially in any sort of military or paramilitary organization.

I am honestly confused why anyone would even base rank on reputation. They don't always correlate. You "look" at reputation when you are considering someone for a leadership position but it is only one piece of the whole.
How does the term reputation not work here?

                  Reputation
                  rep·u·ta·tion
                  /ˌrepyəˈtāSHən/
                  Noun
                  1) The beliefs or opinions that are generally held about someone or something.
                  2) A widespread belief that someone or something has a particular habit or characteristic.
Reputation gets you higher rank in life no matter what you do. You work in an office, you get the reputation of being a dude who gets things done or knows certain things, you get moved up the latter. Its a perfect term to use. The term reputation has nothing to do with being well known nor liked. You can have a reputation of being a bad dude or a meanie or some mysterious unknown and still work your way up the ladder just fine.

I am not trying to argue with you but since you asked the question, and since you quoted me. I am going to assume you really want me to answer it. I hope I am not missing your vibe here and it was only rhetorical.

You need to re look at that definition. You ever try to promote some off an opinion you are in a world of hurt. I get the system but don't confuse reputation with ability or qualification. They are not the same thing. You can have the best or worst reputation in the world but that is an opinion. What gets you promoted is meeting set qualifications or job performance.

I think the point Atmo was making is that in a game world, to have any sort of rank system using reputation is the easy choice. True, in the real world their are numerous factors, but for ease of administration in game it is all lumped into reputation. Your reputation with superiors includes the other factors that can determine success: Work Ethic, Intelligence, People skills, etc.

We also take these abilities into consideration as we elevate people beyond the lower ranks. If it is determined your character can't 'hack it' (from an IC standpoint), you may find it harder to get into a leadership role.
