  • Reserve Feats (Wizard/Sorc)

I believe most of us know what these are. They are fairly low power feats that require a spell of a specific level to function and do damage per spell level. For example a spell might do 1d4 magic damage per spell level of a specific school of magic. So, a level 9 spell would do around 9d4 magic damage.

I Feel like these would help wizards feel more useful in PvE, because at the moment, I believe they just buff everyone, summon something, buff it, and stand there.

    Or poly morph...

Yes? No? Maybe? Why not? I would love to hear peoples views. This is something I believe wizards need for PvE, that wouldn't effect PvP balance at all (In my oppinion).

The book system has clear flaws in nwn2 persistent worlds.

Like a spontaneous cast for wizards? I kind of am opposed, only because I think sorcerers already have that role ... A Wizards' strength is supposed to lie in their ability to prepare; on the flip side, they should have a corresponding weakness.

I do agree that the memorization system is not really well-adapted for a PW's dungeon-crawling format though.

        Invisible Needle
        Type of Feat: Reserve
You create tiny darts of force.
Prerequisite: Ability to cast 3rd-level spells.
Benefit: As long as you have a force spell of 3rd level or higher available to cast, you can use a standard action to hurl a tiny needle-shaped projectile created from pure force. This attack requires a successful ranged attack roll, and the dart has a range of 5 feet per level of the force spell. The needle deals 1d4 points of damage per level of the highest-level force spell you have available.

This spell gains damage from Sneak Attack and Death Attack when appropriate.

Trigger Spells: Mordenkainens Sword, Isaacs Lesser Missile Storm, Isaacs Greater Missile Storm, Bigbys Interposing Hand, Bigbys Forceful Hand, Bigbys Grasping Hand, Bigbys Clenched Fist, Bigbys Crushing Hand, Orb of Force

        Or...

        Acidic Splatter
        Type of Feat: Reserve
You can channel magical energy into orbs of acid.
Prerequisite: Ability to cast 2nd-level spells.
Benefit: As long as you have an acid spell of 2nd level or higher available to cast, you can throw an orb of acid as a ranged touch attack. The attack has a range of 5 feet per level of the highest-level acid spell you have available to cast and deals 1d6 points of damage per level of that acid spell. This spell gains damage from Sneak Attack and Death Attack when appropriate.
Trigger Spells: Acid Fog, Greater Shadow Conjuration, Melfs Acid Arrow, Storm of Vengeance, Mestils Acid Breath, Vitriolic Sphere, Lesser Energized Shield, Energized Shield, Weapon of Energy, Orb of Acid

        Sorry for double post.

Think of them as 'spell' auto attacks.

I've never been for these types of feats. The Drawback to the wizard/sorc is that when the tank is empty it's empty. I've played my fair share of arcane casters, I've personally never had a feeling of "oh hum" while running with a group. It's smart that wizards are buffing the people in front of them. I personally dont summon minions they get in the way if you ask me, id rather have that "boom saved the day" spell or replacement buffs saved up instead of "wasiting" them on a summon and it's buffs myself.

Well, contributing to a fight is a little better in my opinion. Summons or poly morph is the only way to do it effectivly. 'Boom' saving the day rarely happens, frankly, I don't believe I have ever saved the day as a wizard with one spell in PvE. Usually there are the two extremes, its a wipe and everyone dies a horrible death but me because I am in the back twiddling my thumbs and go ethereal, or we roll through no problem, and I standing there twiddling my thumbs deciding when to use my 5 magic missiles.

Lets be honest here, this server is fairly pro-fighter with the design. All high health low AC mobs.

I'd much rather see Pathfinder Staves. 10 charges, and they regenerate 1 charge every game day. Whats that, two hours?

That would be Sweet. You wouldn't have unlimited spells, but it'd give you a pool of extra 10-20 spells for when you really needed them.

And it wouldn't cost you gold to use so you would be afraid of using it like wands.

Eh... That would be hard to implement. These are already here, and many servers use them. A few people I spoke to called them a 'waste of a feat', but I would HARDLY call them a waste, being a wizard player for a long time myself.

True enough, and I've suggested these feats before in fact. What I don't like about them is that they only really suit Battle wizards. Scholars, Crafters and just regular mages would still be left in the current situation.

Also, Mages of level 20+ can't take any more feats (I doubt they would take this in place of an Epic feat) meaning that these feats wouldn't be able to be used by a large number of players anyway.

A simple script running once per game day that give 1 charge to any equipped stave wouldn't be that hard right? Ok so its obvious I'm not a scripter.... :P

Also I just think having a staff which can shoot a variety of spells is just more fun than being stuck with the same *pew pew* laser beams forever (sorry Saulus, had to steal that)

I am not sure why these feats could not be implemented, for the most part they are not broken by any stretch of the imagination. I think with the way the rest system is that this would be beneficial. I know there are slight differences from the NWN engine and PnP game, but an arcane caster is often a blaster, with little comparison. Yes a wizard can also be a problem solver, but I dislike that someone playing one would feel they are obligated to be a buff machine. With the changes to fighter and equipment improvement, there becomes less need for all the buffs.

My thought is why not implement them, this would be great addition to the server. I do know that we are short staffed and there are plenty of other things that could & should be done first.

I wish that I could help script, but sadly I now very little and have never used the tool set. But if someone is willing to teach, I am willing to learn a bit, before I go back to school at the end of September.

I think something to engage buffbots more than just firing a heavy crossbow would be nice for sure, but something like Invisible Needle intrudes pretty heavily on the Warlock niche of lower damage infinite casts/day.

                      Just my two pence.

I support these feats. They are not overpowered and allow wizards to support their groups from low to high levels with a small amount of DPS after the initial buffing periods.

I've noticed Spells here last an extremely small amount of time already

1 Server Hour = 6 Minutes Real Time.

So Hour / CL spells are 6m + 6m per Caster Level ([120max at 20])

                        Now that isn't bad.

When it comes down to the spells labeled 60 Seconds/CL & Minute/CL it becomes a little difficult.

Reserve Spells would help at least contribute! =D

An alternative is craft wand feat. Make yourself a magic missle wand or two. I think they got 50 charges each. Sure they may cost a little gold to make, but arrows cost gold too.
