  • Protection from Energy VFX

Can we remove it? I would love for all ugly vfx to be removed, but if its just this one then I would be 100% happy.

    Reasoning
    • I feel stupid when RP'ing
    • Legionaires tell me off for walking around with it on (even though I can't rest to dispel it anymore)
    • Endure Elements and Resist Energy don't have an animation
    • Every man and his dog has access to this 3rd level spell and it lasts 24h
    • The VFX makes screenshots of important events look ugly (so does Mirror image to be fair but not quite as ugly and doesn't last 24h)

Yes, I realise my RP writing sucks. Just be thankful I keep it short

Yes but the reason for them is so wizards and Clerics feel bad about walking around all god modded out, and look silly rping as such. No vfx means every caster walks around fully buffed at all times.

The limited rest areas outside of inns and faction hq's would help alleviate that maybe?

Instead of Protection from Energy, it's much more subtle to walk about with Energy Immunity to every element, but that does require a much higher level, and many more spell-slots. Thaelis seems to have a point here, as both the higher and lower energy resistance line of spells have no visual effect. To be fair, though, it would be interesting to see Abjuration feilds actually conflicting with each other, as per P&P rules: Have no VFX for one or two abjurations, but anyone fully buffed would be a small star of magical energy.

I prefer to walk around as a massive tree with protection from fire at a +15 dispell check. I dont feel awkward at all Rping as a tree, not one bit!

i never liked the visual effects at all. not having them may make people think twice before engadging in pvp not knowing if thier victom is ready or not for them.

and it dosnt look like a midevil "american gladiators" show. every one running around in giant hampster balls.

Exactly, energy immunity doesn't have an animation...so the discussion about toning down Casters with some kind of "VFX shame campaign" is kinda moot, since the most powerful spells don't have VFX anyway.

Its just a matter of consistency. The game designers arbitrarily gave it a VFX (I guess) because they thought it would look "cool" but actually its damn ugly ><

Alas, there are no decent sonic spells even if you prepared them.

"They come with fire, they come with axes... gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning. Destroyers and usurpers, curse them."

I think all vfx's for spells for buffs are stupid IMO.

Ok you know what people have stopped playing on the server, Clerics and favored souls favored souls more because they are locked. But once they put though the effects that, changed the way freedom worked, and added a VFX to stone body they dryed up because the clerics could not walk around at normal speed and they had a stone skin effect for stone body. they could not walk around in god mode. SO VFX are good when it comes to you being face to face and Rping. If all we did was run around and kill monsters I can agree it stupid. BUT they are indirectly a check, that keeps people in line. SO many place people complain about caster being to powerful taking away there VFX gives them more power to be buffed at all times.

Yeah, while I am not fond of looking like a super bright rainbow with all the spells, I like having it so people are not walking around with a massive amount of spells that no one knows about.

I like players not knowing; it allows every single character to have a great sense of mystery about them, and it opens up a lot of doors for strategy. Maybe one day you beat up John McFighter, but the next day he approaches you after purchasing a full list of boons from a Red Wizard and ruins you.

Mystery is a fun tool to employ in mechanics as it is in RP and stories. Of course players WANT to know EVERYTHING, but giving it to them ruins the fun of having the mystery to begin with. Also, the fluffy spells distract players from RP just by being so shiny.

That's why we hide the effect list, and challenge ratings... really all that leaves is visual effects for spells as any indicator. I can't say I love them all, but I do find them useful.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
