  • Yeah...everything there is super tough, and many immune to magic! I know that's a bit of a spoiler but still, it's certain death for casters, that isn't exactly a nice surprise. Casters beware!

*as post is edited by DM* Help, I'm being repressed! :P

Yes, I realise my RP writing sucks. Just be thankful I keep it short

    • I am not sure I would say it was certain death for casters It is difficult, but change up your spells a little and you can manage it. It is really hard though.

      • Oh, I'm sure a caster can survive in a party whilst invisible Also, are you sure you aren't an Eldritch knight? *peers suspiciously at her*

Also btw my definition of a caster might be different to yours.
Caster: A class with attack bonus of 1/2 their level or less, who relies solely on casting spells to damage stuff. Usually also can't wear armour.

My suggestion is to name and color them something else than the Cold Bones spawn you meet at the undead ruins and by the destroyed mansions other places on the mountain. They are far superior to these spawns.
I thought the color is to denote the harder ones in the area, not to match up between areas. Is that not the case?

Correct. It's a general indicator of difficulty for a given level range.

Just like a level 30 Green is going to be way tougher than a level 20 Green.

The blues and red encounters are proportionally more difficult than the green, so if we made the greens blues, then the blues would have to all become reds... you see?
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

What would the red ones become? *smiles*

                    • The cold bones shouldn't be green, they should just be normal white mobs.

Yep, high level mind-based spells seem to work ok on most of those dudes (though they have surprisingly decent Will saves for uncouth barbarians, does Rage grant a bonus?). Which is a relief, since it takes 150d6 (AKA all my 9th level spells!) just to kill one of the white-named ones!

I can also testify that the new Barbarian rage regeneration is working and has the desired effect. Barbarians do not die quickly....far from it.

                            • One thing to keep in mind for Icewind Dale is we intentionally are avoiding encounters with high numbers of NPCs, both for lag reasons but also for more of a challenge. If you are only fighting 4-5 tough NPCs you can be a bit more strategic about who you take down first etc.

                              • On the new Icewind dale areas. Love them, areas encounters are (what i have faced) fun, and a hold a descent challenge for a small group.

Only spawn I think needs a looking into is the Frozen bones in the glaciers. The Move silent check mechanic seems borked, seems to be places that no mater what the check says they will spawn on you. Second that they are a never ending loop of spawns. So they can over run you while they never stop spawning, Or if you can kill them, you have an unlimited pool of monsters to kill and gain XP , gold and loot from from.
