  • Shadowdancer RP summons

    Hello all,

I was playing with James and Roman earlyer, and during the course of RP, we needed a guard. So, as a shadowdancer, I summoned up my shadow, since it has almost no combat capacity at the levels it gets obtained at. Seeing as that's the case, would it be possible to give shadows 'disguise self' with 1/2 rank in disguise, seeing as they are technically a shadowy duplicate of their creator, rather than a faceless being summoned from the Fringe? It would make for interesting RP, and actually give dancers a reason to summon for more than a 1-round distraction.

    Thanks for reading,
    Kit

One thing I want to clarify, a DM was around but already in an event. We were given approval to RP a guarded escort to the city.

On the topic of giving Shadows Disguise Self, I don't see the point. They are shadows. You can RP them looking different if you'd like, but they will never appear corporeal and anyone looking at them will notice that right off the bat.

      Summon Shadow (Su)

At 3rd level, a shadowdancer can summon a shadow, an undead shade. Unlike a normal shadow, this shadow’s alignment matches that of the shadowdancer, and the creature cannot create spawn. The summoned shadow cannot be turned, rebuked, or commanded by any third party. This shadow serves as a companion to the shadowdancer and can communicate intelligibly with the shadowdancer. Every third level gained by the shadowdancer adds +2 HD (and the requisite base attack and base save bonus increases) to her shadow companion.

If a shadow companion is destroyed, or the shadowdancer chooses to dismiss it, the shadowdancer must attempt a DC 15 Fortitude save. If the saving throw fails, the shadowdancer loses 200 experience points per shadowdancer level. A successful saving throw reduces the loss by half, to 100 XP per prestige class level. The shadowdancer’s XP total can never go below 0 as the result of a shadow’s dismissal or destruction. A destroyed or dismissed shadow companion cannot be replaced for 30 days.

It's a shadow. You can talk with it, but it's a shadow. Of course we could always make it so that you lose 200 xp every time you dismiss it...

Maybe if they were useful, that would be worth it.

Heh, yeah, the death domain shadow and the shadow dancers summons could really use some tweaking!

Their RP value is outstanding though.

Have them deal strength damage on each hit, like real shadows do.

The disguise could always be a use of
                Shadow Illusion (Sp)

When a shadowdancer reaches 3rd level, she can create visual illusions. This ability’s effect is identical to that of the arcane spell silent image and may be employed once per day.
I don't think the XP loss would be objected to, if the class as a whole was closer to it's P&P version:
                Shadow Jump (Su)

At 4th level, a shadowdancer gains the ability to travel between shadows as if by means of a dimension door spell. The limitation is that the magical transport must begin and end in an area with at least some shadow. A shadowdancer can jump up to a total of 20 feet each day in this way; this may be a single jump of 20 feet or two jumps of 10 feet each. Every two levels higher than 4th, the distance a shadowdancer can jump each day doubles (40 feet at 6th, 80 feet at 8th, and 160 feet at 10th). This amount can be split among many jumps, but each one, no matter how small, counts as a 10-foot increment.
                Cheers,
                Kit

I second that. Can you imagine the possibility of a master of shrouds/shadowdancer? (since they share some skills like hide even?!)
Would have to be evil of course >

Was the NWN2 Shadowdancer Shadow fixed so it properly matches the alignment of the Shadowdancer, and immune to Turn Undead? I know in NWN1 the shadow was always evil, regardless of the Shadowdancer's alignment, and this caused all kinds of RP and mechanical issues for goodly shadowdancers.

AFAIK it's still gloriously evil and affected by turning. Meaning if you've the Death domain powers or are an SD+Cleric/Paladin/Blackguard then you can disable, destroy or have your own spawn attempt to rip your face off with ease!

                          From the Wiki:

Regarding Necromantic Animation and Extraplanar Summoning

Necromantic Animation is defined as the raising of spirits, bodies, or outsider presences through necromantic magics. Unless authorized in writing from the Hands of Mundus for the purpose of research or criminal investigation, necromantic animation is unlawful in all of Sundren. Likewise, the summoning of creatures from evil planes is unlawful in all of Sundren.
Do shadowdancer shadows fall under this law? I would think so, but I was wondering if there is an official ruling.

ICly most npc and pc law enforcers and more than a few of the vigilante types will have a negative (and possibly violent) reaction to the presence of a shadow.

"but he's a nice shadow" probably won't cut it as an excuse.
