  • Black Guards need love too.

This is a suggestion that I know I have brought up before, but never in its own thread. I know that Black Guards get their nifty pet, but I really think that what they lack most, is spells. Now by no means do I expect this to come out soon, but I think it should be seriously considered. This is something I have seen on a number of servers/mods.

Black Guards are as close to an 'anti-paladin' as we have, and I think should get a Paladin-esque spell book. Access to spells within reason, no holy sword of course, but for the most part the rest of the Paladin spell book. I would suggest they get only 2 spells per spell level max ((as opposed to the Paladins 3)) and a max caster level of 6-8. Maybe in time, a scaled down evil version of Holy Sword could be made for them.

Secondly, I was wondering if perhaps in the future the pet could be a choice. I think in many cases a similarly powerful Demonic ally would fit better. So at BG level 3 you take a feat to choose between a Demon or an undead servant.((somewhat like taking the Dino feat)). Or, have that as a normal feat, which might make it easier to code. That would most likely be very tough, but its something I think would add some customization to the class to best fit your RP.

Unfortunately, spell books can't be added to a class. At least, I don't think they can. I agree that Blackguards need work, but I don't know if the improvement needed can actually be made. What I'd rather see is the antipaladin class.

Truth. And that's one of the main reasons why we haven't done anything with it. We would likely make a new PrC before modifying Blackguard as it stands.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

I would love to see something new, as opposed to beefing up Black Guard. That way its much easier to just make it what you want, as opposed to making something else to be LIKE what you really want.

I know it is possible though, Kaedrins pack has spell books for both assassin and BG, a couple servers do as well. I cant say how hard it is, because I know nothing about it, so if you say its too much its too much. Besides I would much rather see a sort of Anti-Paladin Base class. I can just taste all the intrigue.

IT's not a real spellbook, there are a lot of drawbacks.

Isn't Blackguard that Bard, Sorc, and Favoured Soul prestige class with only three levels anyway?
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

Its 10 levels, and similar to Paladin. With turning, spells ((in 1/day feats)), CHA based abilities, and that sort of thing.

                  This class has 10 levels?!

Yes, you get abilities like Cause Critical Wounds and a better undead at higher levels. In case you were being sactastic

Would have thought that, because (if I remember correctly) the spells being bestowed upon are demonoic in nature, rather than divine, taking spells from the wizard spellbook makes more sense than spells from the Paladin spellbook.

Worshiping a Demon/Devil lord is like worshiping a god, they grant spells the same. Also, many Blackguards get those spells from Evil Gods.

Right! Evil gods still bestow divine spells. In PnP blackguards have their own spellbook just like paladins.

Some sort of help to blackguards would be very nice. The only real benefit of blackguards are the skeleton summon. At the moment, there really is no benefit for going all 10 blackguard.

In the later levels of BG you can appreciate the rat in action.
