....Please, no. If we don't want people to cast a spell because it's too powerful, make it less powerful. Don't make them have aribtary fetch-quests.

Incidentally, I suspect the random spellcasting gold tax might be intended as a bit of a money sink.

You know, since casters don't have to buy bulls strength potions, healing potions, poisons, ammunition, etc, to be able to be functional in an appropriate-level dungeon...

If we're going back to casting being free, can we make consumable items a lot cheaper?

      1. The spell doesnt get any more or less powerful due to an asthetic change, youre going to be hitting these dungeons anyway
      2. No, I think it was a misguided attempt by someone who hates hybrid casters as much as you to do balancing (the ones with no component cost)
      3. Yes all potions are too freaking expensive considering they do not do enough with the current balancing of NPC's at the higher lvl

Can we at least make healing spells free?

          1. Exactly.
          2. I don't hate balancing. I hate drek like Etherealness and Bigbys, used by both PC's and enemies, godmode buffing, and casters being better at Fighting than Fighters.
          3. Exactly.

Bit of anecdotal evidence for 2 and 3: To beat one of the guys in the Argyle crypts who casts Bigby's, I have to blow a spell mantle scroll to tank it. Killing every other crypt generall means using two Bulls Strength potions, and about six or seven Silk Bandages. I lose more than I gain.

If in a group with another fighter, we can sometimes afford to have one take the Bigbys to the face and be completely inactive the whole battle (yes indeed, even with 32 Str I'm yet to resist it once), and the other one fight alone against the enemies, without being able to run and abandon their partner. This saves us about 500gp on the spell mantle scroll (and there's complaints about a 50GP stoneskin?)

If in a group with a Cleric, they cast all their buffs, walk in, the hand bounces off their free Spell Mantle, they then slaughter everything with comparable damage to my high-damage low-survival barb, take extremely little, if no damage, then heal off whatever they took.

Cannot wait for them incoming changes.

          - Regardless, yes, healing spells should be nice and free. The point of a Cleric is to be able to provide healing like that, with the cost of potions being the price you pay for not having them (like getting less loot the price for not having a rogue, or getting extra XP and a larger share of gold the result of not having a Fighter)

Yeah, having healing potions seems a bit commercializing instead of providing a free service.

The idea wasn't about balance between spells, the idea was about balance between gold gains.

Fighters go out and farm gold.
Clerics go out and farm gold.

Clerics spend nothing to get their gold.
Fighters have to but heal kits, potions, and what not.

It was to bring some "Price" to running out as a caster to get gold and was decided aaaaaages ago and players voted on where the cost would apply.

              HOWEVER...

This is subject to change as we're implementing a new system that could tie in magics and help bring more balance between the classes without putting a gold cost on spells at all. It's still being looked into.

All spells have material components would you rather carry around a backpack pull of them? This little "Spell pouch" bull sh*t that people RP with is nothing near as much or an assortment of things a spell caster needs though healing spells should be free as they cost no material components.
