  • A Well-Noticed Complaint

A complaint that I noticed that seems to carry some weight seems to be the one of players taking the selection of remaining hidden via the Sundren tool. Here's my thought on fixing the problem.

    Here's a hypothetical situation.

You're player X, who's chosen to hide his status on the Sundren tool, for whichever reasons you decide.

I'm player Y. There's not a large amount of people on, and to be honest, I'd much rather discover and meet someone I don't know than going back to the pit of goblins/orcs/spiders/gnolls/ect. ad naseum...

Player X receives a tell: (( Hey man, sorry to bother you if you're busy but.. can't really seem to find anyone listed on the finder tool, wanna meet up and get some RP going? )) -Player Y

How do you respond? Do you feel it could be a legitimate solution?

(If you say no for any other reason besides something obvious and understandable (( need to leave, AFK, busy, whatever )), why are you online?)

In all the time I've spent here, both playing and DMing, I've only personally encountered one person who had a bad reaction (£$!% you, you metagaming #%*!. Never £$!%ing PM me again. - He later explained in expletive adorned greatness that he considered all OOC banter to be cheating, and boy did he hate that) to being sent a polite PM suggesting that some meeting for RP should be done.

Most people are here for RP, most people are reasonably sane - go ahead and send them PMs!

(The lunatic in question is now very much banned, so don't worry about encountering him).

If people are more than willing to happily meet up for RP... Why aren't they searchable in the first place? O_o
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:

Definitely a possible aid to the issue at hand... I am not sure why I am uncomfortable doing it though. Feel like I'm panhandling or something... I'll try next time the situation comes up.

Some people use the no-search tool to avoid potential meta-gaming issues (Hey! Bob just loaded in and there's suddenly someone hanging out in Baddie HQ #3. The cur).

Sometimes people use it to have what amount to private sessions, or when they're doing things that they don't want people blindly turning up for - I've seen that in large groups and couples. (Gentlemen, we the group of dastardly swines have convened this meeting here in the never-really used caves of obscurity where no spawns or monsters happen. Let us discus our world shattering plots.. Hey you guys! So.. Wow, nice hoods. What you doing?)

I've seen some DMs request that players in their party turn of searchable.

And then some people might toggle it to go grinding.

Having unsearchable set doesn't necessarily mean that all future interaction with others is unwanted, it can just mean that they're not actively seeking surprise interaction, but would be happy to be poked for arranged RPing.

Yeah, I understand your point of view. Honestly though, in a hypothetical situation, if you asked me to RP with you, I wouldn't consider it panhandling at all. Hell Gorri, every single time I run into you, you're more and more dangerous and more likely to kill me.. You better believe I almost **** my pants when Roman attacked Raziel in Viridale, I knew death was coming!

Wow, that's almost an exact quote of a certain organization's annual bash, which was held at an unspecified time in an obscure location that's never really used. (Not a cave.)

I'm stoked you managed to show up, I can never really tell when we're all disguised like that. Just kind of hope for the best and cross my fingers we didn't drag Peridan or Dain in by mistake, y'know?
"Sir, we're surrounded!" "Excellent! Now we can attack in any direction."

                  Wow. You're right.

Let's strip out all those spawns and set every area to friendly.

Grinding for the sake of grinding is discouraged. But sometimes people need money, or items, or are just plain angry. Should we shun all those who want to do some PvE? No, of course not.

Obviously we want people to get together, group up and do stuff, but it isn't always possible.

That encounter in the untrodden was so much fun! Though next time I'll PM and ask if I can get in your face.

As for the unsearchable deal... it's a shyness introvert kinda thing thing... I always think "they're unsearchable cause they don't want to be bothered". The posts here have helped me get a better grip on what it's about and what to do.

All I ask is that folks use that unsearchable sparingly. Not mentioning any names (cause I don't remember any :P), I know there are plenty of folks that turn off searchable as soon as they log in and keep it that way just about all the time every time. This suggestion is mostly for the benefit of new players as it will make it easier for them to have RP encounters and start to fall in love with the server.

Everyone is sooooo worried about possible metagaming that it makes it massively hard to actually get anything done. On Sundren, it was that way when we had tons of players, but it just seems more pronounced now that the pop is so low.

Honestly, I've almost stopped logging in due to the low numbers, over half the server in AFK for hours on end, and the other half unsearchable. Makes it tough to get into a gaming session.

It is personal preference and comes down to choice. If people decide to toggle it off... They have the right. Are they being a bit anti-social? Yes, but there were times when I meant to be anti-social and toggled it off... I did it on purpose. I didn't want it reflected that I was sitting in the Eboncoin hideout, or the Citadel, or whatever faction headquarters my character was affiliated with.

                          Peace out!
                          Cheers!

Yes, there's a little too much of this at the moment I might add. Certain people seem to pop up in AFK "accidentally" leaving themselves logged in for extended periods rather a lot I've noticed.

But in response to the original post, I never have a problem with being poked IG for RP. If I'm otherwise engaged, I'll only say no thanks, no expletives here

Tempted to remove hide from search and just deal with people posting metagaming. But it's not a priority, want to redo all the systems out there first before re-evaluating a better solution to this.

Fix Gameplay = #1 priority for me.
