That's silly. Lots of other things hurt a server.

If you want to find out why people leave, why not explicitly ask? Make a thread asking the playerbase why they have ever left or taken extended breaks in the past (other than for real life issues, since those aren't relevant). Many of the old, faithful players who are currently not playing still lurk the forums, so they might respond, too. This might get you the feedback you need to actually attract them back to the server, or to prevent others from following in their footsteps.

Decide want to do a dungeon > Try to find group > Locator button > There are a few people in the AFK room, none anywhere else or all hidden from locator > Go to solo for a bit > Die anywhere that gives XP due to server being balanced for either a large party, or a favoured soul powerbuild > death penalty = Half a level that took about a month to attain from RP trickle and killing things that grant 5XP each > Ragequit.

    The above, and...

    1) Lack of any kind of item appearance customisation that I knew of. Choose between dying constantly in fights and looking like a cyan power ranger.
    2) The world being inhabited by demigods that threw weave-rupturing magic around for giggles, kind of blowing any nice mundanity in the world out the water
    3) My timezone being a weak one for players and DM's (nobody's fault, really)
    4) RL things. (same as above)
    5) Every kind of aggressive RP beginning and ending with a single spell (Bigbys, Etherealness, or Word of Faith, generally).
    6) Playing a social outcast (my own fault, but when I end up being the only person with any kind of hatred for Red Wizards, it becomes impossible to RP anywhere there is one (see point 5))

Not meaning to be overly negative, but when giving reasons for why I left it's hard not to be. Note that I enjoyed the server long enough to play as much as I did, but the issues above (Mainly, appearance crafting and the yardstick being a Favoured Soul) and I broke off for a bit.

I actually tried to come back and bring a friend with me, once. Since they're not as much into serious RP as having fun, we played curmudgeonous mountain dwarves. We curmudgeoned about for a bit, standing next to some human players and commenting merrily about beards to one another, then got OOCly accused of being trolls, and randomly got death-threated by three or four level 20's. Facepalmed and left once more, wondering when folk stopped being friendly and started being elitist nutjobs that expect everyone they can PvPwn to bow down to them. Looking back I know this is a one-off that dosen't accurately represent the server, but it's things like that which will hit a new player in the face and make them leave.

People will know I still pop in to chat with old folks and hang around a while with no hard feelings to the server, staff, and anyone, really, but when it stops being fun, I stop playing.

Again, hope the above dosen't cause undue rage and such, and I'll take no offense if it's deleted due to being overly negative. I'm still intending to roll on back around when I have more RL time free, and can get into the swing, after the update that rebalances the server comes through.

Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:

I personally think that is a huge issue... to the point where I suggest disabling the ability to block yourself from searches. (let the insults and rotten tomato's fly!)

I play EST 10pm or later and I am lucky to have 3 people on the server with me. Lately I have difficulty locating any of them.

Thankfully Artemis has been around to completely distract me from soloing and grinding and serving my unclean masters

The character appearance I can find frustrating, but if you join a guild and or bust your ass.... you can eventually put together something a bit nicer looking than pink ultraman:

I'm a little too old for power rangers
      Active Characters:

      Roman Miellthorpe -- Crypt Carver
Church -- Bastion priest of the 'tough order'
      Dutch -- Blacksmith
Canus -- Of the Glade Tribe
Gorri Blackbeard -- Dwarf Stout of the Legion

        Reasons for leaving

People come and go from the server for a variety of reasons, people change, lives change, spare time changes and all sorts of other things happen, a gentle change of players is always to be expected.

Sometimes however people do leave, be it forever or for a break, due to in-game reasons. So let's hear them.

I understand this is an emotive topic, so please - leave any rage or baggage you have at the door. I don't want to see this thread descend into a flame war, get filled up with emotive nonsense or just turn into some horrendous passive-aggressive ugh fest. What I want to see is constructive points.

        Some key points;
        • We are working on a slew of changes to the game world which will hopefully address some issues - but these things take time and many cannot be released piecemeal.
        • Remember the Dead Horse topics.
        • Changing (lowering) level caps would necessitate a vault wipe. That would not be popular.
        • Keep calm. Carry on. To much rage and the thread will be locked.
        • Don't get personal. Having a problem with X or Y person isn't up for public discussion.

We want to make Sundren a better place, a fun place and a place people speak well of - Players are absolutely critical to this, and your feedback helps us shape the game world.
It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little - Do what you can.
        Sydney Smith.

We don't. So there's no need to start threads about it.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
