  • DIY Item Modification

On the DragonCoast servers, a system is run where every player, once per month, can submit a file (.erf, iirc) of a modified appearance for any store-bought or loot-table item (meaning, not player-crafted stuff).

This would then be added to the world by a DM or Dev, and given to the player.

Would it be considered to allow this? Character appearance is a pretty big thing for lots of folk, and leaving it to the few and far between winners of RPoTM is extremely restrictive.

I'm not certain how much time it would take, but of course, if all were done at once (maybe as infrequently as at the end of every month) it would be less of a problem, and could add a lot. This would be a one-thing-per-player-per-month, so requests couldn't be that high.

    Could it be done?

RPotM and appearance crafting will be the only methods. We will never accept submissions. It's a huge waste of staff time.

Appearance crafting will be more accessible with the new crafting system.

I'm curious if this will be Charlie's Appearance Changer, XP_Craft, or something totally new. I probably spend more time dressing my characters than killing monsters, so anything would be awesome.

It'll be a totally new system, as coded by the fair hands of GBX.

We've previously had appearance systems in place, but due to issues with massive exploitability they've been removed from everything but item creation (you can still craft sexy custom armour, you just can't modify store purchased things).

XP_Craft, while great that it exists is flawed in many ways... and is in effect an ugly "hack". I won't go into all the technical details but suffice to say while other people may not find item duplication and memory leaks a big problem, we do.

As Doubt said GBX has devised an alternative, much more efficient method. It hasn't been finished yet but it is in the cards.

              ETA?
Player Wish list requests? Not getting yanked AFK in the middle of crafting a set of plate armour for example.

Just out of interest, how long does it take to craft/add the new item for the RPoTM winner?

Whilst doing this, would it double the time to add another, or would it be a matter of adding two files at a time or just flicking a few more switches, with methods in place to make sure the requesting player does most of the work?

I ask mainly because the majority of RPoTM winners are characters I haven't even seen online, leading me to believe that those in certain timezones/play times have little to no chance no matter what effort they put in.

I don't know about the new crafting system or what it entails, but if it isn't a massive waste of time (for instance, having a waiting list for new items and maybe taking ten minutes each month to add some, then leaving the rest until next month, and just getting through the list at your own pace), could this be considered as a temporary solution until GBX's system is in?

It'd be fairly menial work, I admit, but I'd imagine a lot of people would be very much appreciative of it.

It's time consuming. We have to review the items, make sure they are tagged properly, classified right, no weird stats, etc. The DMs have enough responsibilities.... do you want your char request to take even longer to respond to?

We've always shyed away from player submissions because of the effort this screening takes.

We only do it for RPotM because that isn't even once a month. People usually wait before asking for it. All I can say is we have a lot of items, we're adding more... and that will have to be enough until we have the new appearance crafting in.

Custom DM items also have a special appearance but they are handed out as rewards for events or quests etc by individual DMs.

It takes longer than that for my toolset to load up and get the module in

Any vague ideas of when this new system will be ready?

I assume the answer will be 'When it is' but considering we all know how long the new item-crafting (not appearance-crafting) system has been in the pipeline, it can't hurt to ask.
