Being set hostile is an OOC action, you should neither know nor care where they are, nor should it affect your RP to any degree at all.

Neither should your RP change if someone enters an area, unless you've got some zone of omnipotence covering the map. I've lost track of the times I've seen people gather together for /w, switched language or just psychically gone 'I think there's someone else here' after someone new, but unseen has entered the area

Adjusting your play style because someone is on the map is a no-no.

Get rid of the info and prevent the problem.

I act differently when there is someone in the area... Because if I am all alone and have to get to the other side, I run. If there is someone there, I walk. This is the only reason I really ever use the P window. When the server is dead in the wee hours of the night/morning its a good tool to use, to know if you're going to be running around or walking around with the off chance of seeing someone. Maybe that's bad, and metagamey, but honestly I usually don't have the patience to walk all the time, everywhere.

If its becoming a problem, it wont hurt me to lose it, so go for it. Though, I wouldn't be sad if it stayed around.

I'm a complete noob with xml's and GUI scripting but from I do know the following might be possible.

If someone is set to netural or party with you then you can see them in the Elsewhere column. If they are set to hostile with you then they are not. It might even be possible to have the anonymous option toggle you visible or not visible in the Player List as well as the Searching For Players tool.

lol I will honestly say I am suprised that the running/walking issue is the first thing to come to mind, and not the "metagamin' the stealthers."

How will I know when it's safe to OOCly PvP grief people, if I can't see where the witnesses are?

Just deal with it ICly.. Have your toon look suitably embarrassed for having been spotted out for his daily jog, then sheepishly slow down and stroll off.

Alternately, doing some stretching exercises and confidently say it gets you out in the fresh air and is a great way to keep in shape.

I say remove the elsewhere icon if it can be done. What i didn't know is that there is a find people tool. I wonder could the player list be replaced with the find people tool? (just a thought)

I've personally also used the player list to bust exploiters while I was on my player account. And to avoid hostile areas when I saw someone in there who was known to screw around with PvP killings under the guise of 'conflict RP' without any actual RP attached, which is really just griefing. Then again, that same person probably wouldn't be there if he didn't know there was someone to kill in the first place.

The ability to see who's in an area is a bit of a double edged sword. I'd be OK with seeing it removed, though.

As for attaching it to the searchable setting for players, I can't do that because I can't alter anything about the UI dynamically when P is pressed. That's hardcoded.

To be clear, no one's advocating any changes to the player-find tool. We want the player list that appears when you hit 'p' to not show who's in the area as you, be they friendly, neutral, or hostile.

Also note that this change doesn't make it so you don't know who's hostile or not. There is a sword and a shield icon next to the names that tells you if someone is hostile to you or not. You do not need a big red HOSTILE indicator text for that.

So far, I have heard no real strong arguments for why it should remain.

                          The downsides:
"I might have to walk." (Who cares, just run.)
Can't see my friends in the area. (Send a tell, like everybody else.)
Can't see if people are fighting. (Good.)
Can't change my RP. (Good, you shouldn't be.)

                          The upsides:
Prevents severe and blatant metagaming from ooc knowledge of stealthers or invisibles being in the area.
Prevents people from adjusting their play style based on ooc knowledge of who's in the area.
Prevents people from 'checking' zones for certain characters that are otherwise trying to avoid attention.
Prevents players from hopping into their faction zones to look for players to pvp who are running there. (Though pc-locate also has this abuse, its manageable by switching it off.)

Basically, any real arguments against it are matters of convenience that can be overlooked in light of the extreme advantages such a change bestows. Quite simply, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages here.
                          The poetry that comes from the squaring off between;
and the circling is worth it, finding beauty in the dissonance.

If we are voting, I vote just take it away. If it means that I will literally run into people, so be it. Rane has just decided that to protect people he must be in very good physical shape, and as such is now an avid jogger.

lol yeah the p button is pressed just to see if "persons" are in the area so I know to walk myself as a vamp time is vital and running helps. Also being able to see whos in the area helps cause I can set them hostile easyer right on that list with a little blue mark next to there name cause well Not everyone is so friendly that player list can get long and the right click sudren menu for that normaly results in vouching for them no hostiling.
