  • Pathfinder Style Dispelling

In DnD/NWN2 dispel magic works in the following way: You roll a d20 and add your caster level, up to the maximum bonus stated in each spell, against 11 + the spell's caster level, against every spell on the creature.

    Lesser Dispel caps at +5
    Dispel Magic caps at +10
Greater Dispel caps at +15 (or +20 in PnP)
    Disjunction has no cap.

The problem with this is that at as the caps are reached the spells become more and more useless against foes that are within the same power range as you. I'd like to suggest that the dispel series are scrapped and replaced with their Pathfinder variations.

In Pathfinder, Dispel checks work the same way as in DnD except that none of the Dispel Magic spells cap your caster level bonuses, instead you roll against the highest level spell on a target, then the next highest and so on, until you successfully dispel a single spell, at which point the spell ends. The more powerful Dispels allow you to strip more spells at once.

Dispel Magic: You can strip one spell from an opponent
Greater Dispel: You can strip one spell per four caster levels you possess.
Disjunction: Functions as per DnD, stripping all spells.

Brb, rolling a Red Wizard of Abjuration.

Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

        ISSUE!

Knowing the casted level of an effect isn't possible in a script that I can see. We know the effect, we know who casted it, but it's not exposed the level of creation.

Therefore it's impossible for us to muck with dispelling where caster levels are taken into consideration.

what does it roll against currently? is that not the same as level...

should be some way of approximating this idea.. it just seems too well thought out. much like everything I have seen from PF.

balance is accounted for and things tend to make more sense.

surely there is a solution! Great suggestion Loth.

thanks to GBX for entertaining our musings, always good to know suggestions are heard.

There's solutions of course but without something simple like this function you would be making something do 4x the work to accomplish the same thing. In short it comes down to this: impractical.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Wouldn't the EffectDispelMagicBest() function do exactly what's needed?
