So while sitting at work today i thought of something i was wondering about. The listen skill would be nice if its even possible ...

Can you use the range system in place for how far you can see people speak to use your actually listen skill. For example a whisper, would open the range further instead of having to physically roll a listen d20, you would litterly see it as (Flint Bricksforbrains whispers : blah blah blah blah) , this poping up still as a whisper , but based on listen skill , further you are , you will still hear them.

Its possible but not without a lot of work.... as it would tie heavily into our chat plugin system. GBX could speak better to this.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Would definitely like this for spy-type characters. Making listen checks for nearby PC's on each whisper message typed on the server could get heavy though, I'm not sure.

People will just end up using cheating whispers of sending tells to whisper. They do it already anyway XD

Back in the day, PL made some rather harsh rules to avoid that behaviour. It's hard to regulate fairly though, considering one could technically whisper right by someone's ear and you'd never be able to hear it without some sort of magical enhancements. The way transmitted messages are being handled in NWN2 (with the plugins), it's not possible to set a range in which your whispers can be heard. I tried something to that effect a long time ago, but it was buggy and I tossed it in the trash can.

Reason i was thinking was for spy characters as well , i dont like spork having to stand litterly right next to someone to hear their whisper, first it takes away from rp anyways since im not really hiding, but mearly using the skill.

Yeah, its true. The few of us who do whisper get overheard by dumb power hungry 2 skill point clerics, The system would be good but would be largely ignored due to the fact that alot of people favour tells because hey are safer.

*edit* Im not agreeing that this is the way things should be (I play a rogue mainly after all) but Im just reiterating the point snoop made that tells will be used instead!

You can, actually. You just cancel the original whisper and script one yourself.

But it's not going to do much, because of what I said. There might be rules for it, but people will always always go the safe route with sensitive info.

Thats disappointing, Spork is having alot of fun just following jess and watching her kissing every man on sundren, and whispering sweet nothings...well cept Cirion, she has taste appearently.... Boooya!

I've actually seen a fair amount of people using the standard whispers for sensitive info (do it myself as well. Have only very rarely done the /tell thing), and by having my character nearby I picked up on things I shouldn't have while I wasn't even really trying to do so.

The features (custom distance and listening in) could have their uses when playing with players who realise that allowing their characters to be left vulnerable at times can lead to interesting RP later on. If you want to ensure privacy, you can always meet in a place that is actually private, such as an inn room or a faction HQ.

Thats what got me thinking about it, alot of players use whispers and spork has just sat there listening to them for awhile, quite entertaining.

Maybe this can be looked at again at a later time. Too much other stuff taking priority at present.
