It was a joke. It doesn't really work, in case you were wondering, though. I just look stupid before I am Word of Faithed/Killed in a multitude of ways.
Lame, self effacing pokes aside - once you cast a hostile spell, the etheralness breaks, that's not a big issue. However, would it be possible to fizzle the summon spells/class summons (Master of Shrouds, Dreadmaster)?
I once sat and watched a certain paladin have to fight 10+ summons while a certain vampire continued to cast summon after summon after summon after summon while etheral. While highly amusing, it was also very depressing.
Yes, it shouldn't be too hard to make summons fizzle. In fact, all the standard summon monster spells use the same script.. so I suppose I could do that without it taking too much of my time.
You could simply recreate the Etherealness spell to do the Ethereal effect + the spell failure portion of the total defense script(I assume its either 100% failure or a set constant % failure in which case the constant can be modified)
If you could change the tag for the Etherealness spell you should be able to replace it with the custom new one by using Etherealness' old tag and work around anyone needing to relearn it
This is all in theory of course as I havent played around with the NWN2 scripting engine at all
I talked to my roomate (who has done scripting for NWN2) and its actually even easier. You can go into the .2da file and change which script etherealness calls to a custom script that involves spell failure.
I agree with Mach's view on this spell that it should only be used to get away, free, run screaming like a girl(without anyone hearing you(no offense ladies)) from a fight.

I've never seen anyone abuse the spell to be honest. I can also say I've never abused it as i don't think that's the intention of it. As a matter of fact i think khan's only used it once or twice. But i agree with most here with what to do about it.
Its a shame people cant just say "wow i can do that with this spell? that doesn't sound fair, i shouldn't whore it for all its worth"

The PnP description of the spell notes that spells cast in the ethereal plane only effect things in the ethereal plane. The buffing's fine from where I'm standing. The point about summons and WoF is a valid one, so if this spell's going to be limited in any way, that's the only limitation that should be made.

According to this often credited source, See Invisibility can see through ethereal. By extension, this also means that Dragon Sight would see them, as would the Warlock's Devil Sight.
Now I've made my stance pretty clear in the past when it comes to "official sources" like this. They are often self-contradictory and in some cases get ignored completely when the novels come out (and I'll take the novel's side any day of the week). However, as long as they help the concept of good story writing, rather than crap all over it, I don't mind referring to them. And in this particular case, I think it has the right idea.
The best part about making more spells see through ethereal is that not only does it help the battle aspect of it but also the stealth aspect. Wizards and clerics will now have to rely upon stealthy individuals to do their spy work for them, as their target may have means of seeing through their magic. This encourages rp and extends the role of rogue-ish types.
