  • Triadic Knight, balance query

I was just wondering if what I have read about the triadic knight is correct. Assuming the player character takes the class at sixth level (the earliest it can be taken) they gain an Epic feat at level 10. That seems mighty powerfull doesnt it? I mean twice your level as damage is a pretty big jump from what most characters can acheive and it affects crit immunes as well.
Since we have the myrkropolis and argyle keep as mid/high level areas, it leaves the weapon masters and rogues dealing one point of damage per hit while these triadic knights can come along with their immunity to everything bar the imprisonment spell and smite anything for 50+ damage. Tell me if Im wrong, I havnt played a paladin since their inception in 2e so I may be a little rusty on the facts.

Triadic Knight slows down spellcasting progression, drops Lay on Hands, repeats several paladin bonuses, offers a lot of throw-away abilities, and its levels don't stack with paladin levels for smiting.

    Translation:
A 20 paladin smites for +20 dmg, has 3 4th level spells, is immune to disease/fear, and Lays on Hands for 20xCHA MOD.

A 15 paladin/5 Triadic Knight smites at +30, has 1 4th level spell, is immune to blind/daze/poison/disease/fear, Lays on Hands for 15xCHA MOD, gets a 10th level shout/shield other/discern lies 1/day. There's no imprisonment spell.

Basically, the Triadic Knight has some neat stuff, but it's hardly imbalanced, and it's very weak compared to some of the other PrCs.

Thanks for clearing that up roguethree, I thought the class had full spell progression and its smiting stacked, must have misread it.

Pas de probleme. When I first saw that class, I saw Great Smite and thought, "Gimme!" Lack of stacking smite levels tempered that dream.

Unless I'm wrong.. you'd only need maybe 1 or 2 levels of Paladin to meet the requirements of that class? What happens if you then have a cleric with those one or two levels of paladin. Then it wouldn't mostly be repeating what a paladin had and adding to what the cleric has.

They'd gain a whole bunch of immunities aswell freeing up a fair few spell slots for other buffs to be set in place.. Unless ive entriely misunderstood the class, ive only read over it once or twice so please correct me if I need it

          Peace!

You'd lose two levels of spellcasting ability and get immunities to things that you're well-equipped to handle. I see Triadic Knight being useful in a fi/cl/divine champ/Triadic Knight build.
