Though 4th edition is an abomination, it has a lot of feats for pure fighters to take that would make them the epitome of melee masters here, as in they'd actually exceed a buffed cleric/favored soul if they were similarly buffed.
It's stuff like "Armor Specialization" that gives the fighter DR and dodge bonuses to AC when wearing the appropriate armor and Weapon-Type Mastery that grants bonus damage and dodge ac when using the chosen weapon type, and these feats typically require heavy investments into the fighter class itself. A lot of the benefits are passive, so there'd be less chance of something going terribly wrong.
