  • Returns Bins

On another server I played on we had these returns bins at the merchant stores. If you bought an item and for some reason wanted to undo the purchase, you could then drop said item into this bin and the merchant would retrieve the item and you would get your money back as well.
Note, this was only doable while still being at the merchants store. If you'd walk out from there with the purchased item you wouldn't be able to return the item for the full price.

Would this be possible and of any interest to implement into Sundren?

It would be nice to have something like this if only to check out what the gear looks like before being stuck with it. Did the return bin become unavailable when you closed the store interaction, or actually left the area? It seems less exploitable if it disappeared as soon as the store interaction was closed.

I don't think I have ever seen this done, but sounds cool. Also have no idea how much trouble it would be to script. May be more trouble than it is worth (though I really hope not cuz it sounds like a perfect answer to all the people that buy stuff only to find that it is ugly on their toon :P).

This would solve the whole this looks like cr@p on him/her problem. I can not tell you how many clothes I have purchased only to throw it away for it did not look good on Elandra.

Completely agree with this suggestion. Raman ended up with a pink armor once. Pink! And he paid 6k for it.

To answer BedlamX's question; The return bin became unavailable once you left the area. We never (at least to my knowledge) had no problems what so ever with exploits using this system.

Edit: The "area" in this case was only a ten feet or so radius around the merchant.

That would make scripting more difficult, I would think.

Something like this is just way to exploitable. I don't know how other people would have done this but I can't say it's something we'd like to do.

We'd have to track every new item you bought from a store, and prevent exploitation from crashing/leaving etc...

You know...there has to be a way to get a look at armors and gear before buying them that is not suseptible to exploitation. It does get quite frustrating buying items that cost a butt-load of gold only to find that they are exactly opposite of what your character would buy/wear. My Lathanderite Master of Radience bought a cloak that said "bright" as the color. It's a dull grey. And I have seen and heard so many complaints about the way things look on characters after they bought them sight unseen that it sounds like a bunch of whining...when it is really a legitimate gripe.

I'l make an offer to the staff. If one of you can send me the item files for the custom items in game, I'll import them into one of my test modules and spend a few hours taking screen shots of each armor on the various races/genders and post them to my photobucket album for all to see before buying. At least that should help get rid of the gripes about spending a fortune on "ugly" armor. You don't look at the pics, it's your own fault for buying something sight unseen.

Unfortunately we aren't going to send out our master item blueprints to anyone asking, sorry.

We get a lot of requests that detail things that are hardcoded, IE stores. There's some ways to get around certain limitations but things like implementing this request are just downright messy.

Trying to track items in all stores before a player leaves the building/area is likely just to make the server suck up more CPU time more than anything.

Meh...no worries. I am officially out of ideas on the "what does this armor look like" topic.

What if somehow the crafting dummies got implemented, you can see what you're making on them ahead of time. What if there was a way to see what items in stores looked liked on them as well?

I understand the desire for this but I'd really be looking at Obsidian as to why a basic feature like a buyback with simultaneous inventory screen interactivity... but the same could be said for a lot of things that never made it into the game.

Basically, you'd have to setup code to flag every time the player opens the store. Then you'd have to have an onacquire event... that would run only if they are flagged as having a store open (which we have to flag off when they are done).

So for that acquire event, you'd have to log every single item a player 'gets'. Problem is, allowing them to give them item back as a refund becomes more difficult.

There's no mechanism to manipulate stores to offer a discount on just one item, on the fly through scripting... there's all kinds of messy things we could do to avoid that, have a separate piece of dialog and make a custom inventory GUI and every item that matches what has been saved for that player gets flagged.

Take for instance viewing the store inventory on the dummy. There's no way through scripting to get the store's inventory as manipulatable data. So we would have to have a manual itemized list of items and tags for every store just to make that work.

No matter how you slice it, there's no direct route from A to B... and the end product is far from ideal.
