  • Runescarred Berserker

I've been waiting a long time for someone to make this awesome PrC for Neverwinter Nights 2, but to no avail. So I decided to take matters into my own hands - with no experience whatsoever in dealing with 2da and tlk files. However, I'm getting somewhere, and I would like to know if the Sundren staff and community would like to have this class on the module. If so, I'll keep working on it, and I wouldn't mind the help of some folks that do know how to work around with this. Anyhow, I'll start by posting the class' features, then what I've done so far.

(Note: I did some changes to the skills and feat requirements to make up for skills that aren't on Sundren)
Deadly barbarians who bear magical runes carved into their flesh, runescarred berserkers are among the most feared of Rashemen's defenders. They are loyal bodyguards to the hathrans of the land and stand ready to unleash a storm of martial fury at a single word from any Witch. Many runescarred berserkers bind themselves to a single Witch and protect her with their very lives, but others become the chieftains of berserker lodges or take up a simple existence as a wandering defender of the Rashemi people.

    Requirements:

    Alignment: Any nonlawful.

    Base Attack Bonus: +7

Feats: Iron Will, Toughness, Extend Rage.

Skills: Intimidate 5 ranks, Sense Motive 2 ranks, Knowledge Arcana 2 ranks.

    Class Features:

    - Hit Die: d10

    - Base Attack Bonus: High.

    - High Saves: Fortitude.

    - Weapon Proficiencies: None.

    - Armor Proficiencies: None.

    - Skill Points: 4 + Int Modifier.

    - Class Skills: Craft, Climb, Intimidate, Jump, Listen, Sense Motive, Survival and Swim.

    - Scribe Runescar: A 1st-level runescarred berserker learns how to carve a runescar into their own skin. To learn a runescar spell, a berserker must have a Wisdom of 10+spell level. Runescars are considered divine spells, although a berserker does not actively prepare or cast them. To activate a runescar, the character must take a standard action and touch the rune. All runescar spells target only the runescarred berserker or an item in her possession, even if the spell scribed could normally be bestowed on another subject. After activation, the runescar's magic is discharge, and the rune fades to nothing but a faint outline. Typically, a berserker's skin is crisscrossed with dozens of old, discharged runescars.

    - Extra Rage: A runescarred berserker gains additional daily uses of the barbarian rage ability. At 2nd level, she gains one additional rage per day; at 5th level, she gains a decond additional rage; and at 9th level, she gains a third additional rage. For example, a barbarian 8/runescarred berserker 5 can rage three times per day from her barbarian levels, plus two more times from her runescarred levels, for a total of five rages per day.

    - Ritual Scarring: Through frequent disfiguration of her own skin, a runescarred berserker gains a +1 natural armor bonus to AC at 3rd level. This increases to +2 at 6th level, and +3 at 9th level.

    - Spawn of the Frost: Inured to the bitter cold of Rashemen's winters, a runescarred berserker gains cold resistance 5.

    - Damage Reduction: Starting at 4th leve, a runescarred berserker gains the ability to shrug off some amount of injury from each blow or attack. Subtract 1 from the damage the berserker takes each time she is dealt damage from a weapon or natural attack. At 7th level and 10th level, this damage reduction increases to 2 and then 3 points. This overlaps (does not stack with) damage reduction from any other class feature.

    - Greater Rage: Starting at 8th leve, a runescarred berserker's rage bonuses become +6 to Strength and +6 to Constitution, and a +3 morale bonus on Will saves. Her AC penalty remains -2.

    Runescarred Berserker Spell List:
1st Level: Cure moderate wounds, divine favor, low-light vision, protection from alignment, resist elements, see invisibility, true strike

2nd level: bull's strength, bear's endurance cure serious wounds, darkvision, invisibility, keen edge, protection from elements

3rd level: cure critical wounds, death ward, divine power, freedom of movement, greater magic weapon, haste

4th level: greater invisibility, neutralize poison, restoration, righteous might, lesser globe of invulnerability (originally Spell Immunity), stoneskin

5th level: Greater Dispel Magic (originally antimagic field), dimension door, heal, polymorph self, spell resistance
    So far what I've done:
    -Included the entry in classes.2da
-Included class description and label in dialog.tlk
    -Created the cls_pres_runezerker.2da
    -Created cls_feat_runezerker.2da
    -Created cls_splgn_runezerker.2da

    My problems:
-Dialog will not show up ingame.
-The class will unlock only if Cleave is taken (even if the feat was removed from the cls_pres_runezerker - I based myself off of the frenzied berserker file)
-In the pres_runezerker, there is the script line with nw_AllowFrenz, which I assume is the line used to tell the game you met the prereq for the class. I didn't know what to do with it so I left it there.
-I based the cls_feat_runezerker on the barbarian file - in game, it gives greater rage at character level 11 instead of Runescarred level 8 and does not give the cold resistance feat.
-I didn't include the natural armor bonus, as I don't know how to create the feat.
-I used the cleric's option in the classes.2da to give spellcasting. However, ingame, the spellbook gives access to every and all spells from level 1 to 5 (including divine, arcane, druid and special/item/creature only spells)

    To do:
    -Fix the bugs mentioned above
-Change the skill requirements and class skill to include Sense Motive, Climb, Jump, Swim.
    -Make the class' spell list.

I personally would love to see this class it'd make barbarians actually able to do something on their own. Though one problem i see is that people would take it not being a Rashemi...

    My tomb of old toons:

I bet something could be worked around with the Homeland background feat we receive when we create a new character.

The problem I have with it is it is a High BAB class with what looks to be regular spell progression up to 5th lvl yet requires zero spell casting training prior to taking the class. Considering the spells you have listed you could end up with a full lvl 20 high BAB class with spells not to mention the nat AC boost

True, I thought it might be overpowered too at first, but a level 10 will have 50/50 chance of Dispelling him when he'll be level 17, assuming he takes the class as soon as possible - and unlike eldritch knights or other gishes, his spells won't last very long.

Edit: The berserker also doesn't have a lot of spells to use. At level 10, he'll have 4 1st level, 4 2nd level, 3 3rd & 4th and 2 5th. A level 10 cleric will have roughly twice as many spells.

When you lay it out that way it doesnt look so bad. Now I do picture a rune caster to be more druidic then clerical maybe swapping GMW for burning blade and the dimension door spell seems a bit out of place ( even though I can picture spooky long haired hippy raging witch doctor with tatts and a bone through his nose blinking about)

Something I just thought of, although it's not in the book: Runescarred Berserkers need to touch their runes to activate them. To balance things out, I think it would make a lot of sense if they wouldn't be able to use their runes in heavy armor. I can see them pressing the spot over a leather or hide armor, or even a chainmail. But that's another story with a full plate. Though I'd also remove any verbal components from the spell they use (if it can be done without rewriting the whole spells), since they don't do any casting.

Update: I fixed the dialog.tlk and cleave problems. The class can be taken when meeting the requirements mentionned above.

But I'm utterly lost for the feats and spells.

Sorry we make it a habit not to accept player submissions and I simply don't see this class fitting at all in the server with its background.

Just the time it would take us to review everything is not what we like to spend our time on and why we have no plans as of current to add more classes unless it's specific for events we are working on with the server (like Myrkul and the Horned Harbinger).
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

                    Right, gotcha.
Doesn't seem too far fetched, considering the Samurai, but I won't argue.

                      *shameless self promotion*

If you want to make the runescarred berserker have a spell list, you can look into my Assassin & Blackguard spellbooks (for REAL! lolz) hak
You'll need to solve the same problem I had, eventually.

At the time I was too lazy to optimize it, but I just implemented it out of curiosity in the first place, so it's not a big deal :P

EDIT: on second thought now that there are new functions I'd make it in a more elegant way, multiplayer oriented, but whatever.

Hahah, MadSeer, you got +10 skills in subtlety don't you?

A developer on the server went PrC/Base Class crazy. You may not see anymore in the near future. We like the PrC to apply to the lore of Sundren, it's less about giving everybody infinite character options

Don't get me started on the Samurai, I was not the one who wanted it in the module.
