    The only thing that strikes me about this is that everyone thinks it will be good for scouts/spies because the people they are tracking won't be able to see them on the list.... the opposite holds true too, if you can't find the person you're looking for (say you have a really good GI or track and the person won't OOCly tell you where they are then you're pretty much screwed ICly unless you turn them hostile and have an uber tracking and go to each zone and look for the little red dot, which is, again, metagaming in my mind). Just more thoughts

      I'm not sure I understand your point here, Fezzik.

      The only way to track someone across zones is for the person in question to OOCly tell you where they are anyway. If a character is using the Player List to try and "Track" people in zones, that's metagaming, period, and further exemplifies why such a system would be a good idea.

      This also brings up another valid point: namely it makes those with the tracking feat and the skill to use it even more useful and worthwhile. Another plus, in my book.

        If implemented, it'll probably come with a toggle so people can't auto follow. Auto follow has been a thorn in my side since I can remember.

        Still, the absolute best moment of metagame on sundren was when invis didn't work, someone was invis in a cave and I happened to be watching. A person trying to find them backed their character into them then goes "Whoops!!!" then "AHAH! They're over here!" It was soooooo blatantly metagaming, but I laughed, then deducted a level from the char that they never got back from me

            I am torn on this. I love the idea of not being able to see if someone is there if they do not want to be, but I also like the idea of being able to see if someone is there that you want to PR with. I would hate to login and spend my fist hour + trying to find so and so.

            Yes I know that its a bad thing to pop your toon into a zone and have a look-see, but if I only have 2-3 hours I do not want to spend it looking for somebody.

                don't shoot me, I'm playing more devil advocate.

                I can see this driving some things underground. Yes, you can, if you need to, hunt through tells that are passed back and forth, but do you really want to?

                Bob [tell] Have you seen Joe, I need to steal something from him, and I can't find him.
                Hue [tell] Yes, he's was in XXX last time I saw him.
                Bob [tell] Muhaa haa haa.

                Something else that might happen is if people think they're being stalked, is that they'll sit around the campfire where it's "safe" and not do anything - Or let someone follow them, pop to the side of a transition, drink invisibility or go stealthy and let the person just walk by, and go back where they came from. Unless they're constantly doing this and a dm can see it, you can't nail someone for metagaming in this case, they might have a legitimate reason... I forgot to buy something, I need to talk to... etc.

                If this goes into effect, I would say make the searchable a non-option. Let people figure out for themselves where someone might be hiding in the server. Do they look where the commotion of people is by the fire for their 5th level friend, or do they look in Arygle Keep Moseleum 3? Yes, that's still metagaming, but Nezz does have a point. When you have a limited amount of time, what are you to do?

                * end devils advocate *

                I think I'm neutral on the idea. I don't generally use the player list like that anyway... that's what the Searchable list is for -- if you don't want to be found, I'm not going to bother trying to look for you - so if you're just about to die at the hands of Gruumsh because you broke an artifact in his temple in Mossdale, don't expect me to come looking for you unless you wrote me a note before hand telling me where you were going!

                  Back OT, there are already IC devices to track down the precise location of people that requires zero DM help, so I don't see why you'd rely on OOC information for anything but convenience for yourself.

                      Just curious if this is still a possible idea.
