A quick and nice feature would be the addition of an appraise button to the items contextual menu in the barter screen. That would return the value that the player would be charged for the item at some stores (such as the Exigo public store, and if the player is in a faction, the faction store), and the value the very same stores would pay to buy it.

The existing appraise system seems to work quite well, given the limitations of the pricing system (gems for example are always appraised far to low).
It's based on the perceived sale value of an item - of course what it's worth in the eyes of your toon may not be what wily merchants are willing to pay.It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little - Do what you can.

Is there an appraise system at all? I was merely referring to barter between PCs, to give players an indication of the bartered items' value, according to the appraise skill of their characters: I may have no clue how much a magical item is worth, but my character probably knows better, if he has a high appraise skill - giving the player a way to access this IC information becomes relevant as soon as trade between characters is involved.
Example:
Player A's char trades with player B's char.
Player A's char has an appraise skill of 1. Player B's char has an appraise skill of 20.
Player A appraises the item he is offering. He knows that his character estimates he would get 50 gp at the store.
Player B appraises the same item. His character, being a skilled appraiser, would recieve 500 gp from it selling it at the store.
Based on this information, both players can haggle knowing how much the item's worth to their characters, instead of guessing the value.
Or maybe, it would be better to return the base item value, instead of the modified value at stores, but that usually means that if you buy from a player, you're gonna lose gold when you later sell to a shop, since they never buy at 100% value.

There is indeed an appraise system in place.
Select an item in your inventory, click on the 'Skills' button of the UI (Green dice icon?), click on appraise.
You'll appraise the item and receive a price based on the base value of the item and your appraise skill.
As it uses the NWN2 values it's a little off on crafting components and the like, but otherwise a nice little tool.
Edit:
Here's how it works.

Plus Appraise gives you some rp-powers similar to Lore or Sense Motive. Someone with high appraise would be able to look upon a collection of wares and tell you if they are junk or worthwhile (though that may vary slightly depending on the wares). Someone with high appraise would have a decent enough business sense to know if someone is trying to short change them about the price of something and what price would be 'fair'.
Or at least that's something I've seen a few times in the past with pcs and occasionally by DMs.sigpic
