Well, look at it this way.

Are Brass Knuckles considered a weapon, or fist-gear for Unarmed Combat?

When you start wearing gauntlets to punch things in the face, it's not really your bare fists doing the fighting anymore, and it's generally those fists which transfer the Ki energy for monks that allows them to do 3d10 damage with only their bare hands.

You still use the same techniques for striking pretty much that you would use for bare handed combate wearing a glove or brass knuckles, but no your skin isnt making contact with the enemy anymore. So maybe that would interfer with the transfer to the Ki mumbo jumbo. Does that mean your not open handed fighting anymore if you wear a gauntlet? So if you dont have the unarmed combate feat and you use brass knuckles or a gauntlet to fight does that mean your armed and dont have to give off attacks of opportunity? Also depending on his stlye a monk most likely won't be just using his fists he would be using his elbows knees different parts of his feet and legs, even his head. So if he is hits something with the heel of his foot and he is wearing foot wear, does that still transfer the Ki energy? So i guess if a monk wants to make sure that all his attacks benifit from his Ki he should fight almost naked so nothing gets in the way of his skin striking the enemy? Well if the only way the Ki extra damage gets transfered is by skin contact.

Also i think training and experiance also effects how hard you hit in unarmed combate. I can bench 100kg (around222 pounds) 20 pounds 18 or so times power clean 60kg 20 times, my little brother cant even do half of that. But guess who hits harder? he does, we used this bag machine to measure how hard we hit and he won hands down. Im bigger and stronger than him, but hes done muay thai for years and I haven't and he doesnt have any amazing ki powers that I know of. I guess thats some part of why a smallish looking human monk can hit harder, do more damage than that great big hulking half orc barbarian when it comes to striking unarmed.

granted what i said before won't justify a monk doing more damage with his unarmed attacks in base damage over someguy trained to use a sword, and I guess you cant make a charactor that is strong vs everything. If thats one weakness of playing a monk then so be it, over coming the damage resistance of things with cold iron silver ect.

Plain Cold Iron Gauntlets do exist in the game and can be enchanted with many enhanced damage type (all the elements for sure maybe the beat slayer and others like it as well) that other weapons can be. You can add + to hit but not the flat +/+ hit/damage. As well there is at least one pair of monk only magic gauntlets that are also cold iron based available for purchase in the game.

Perhaps if enough people ask, gauntlet recipes for Silver and other metals can be made available when the new system is implemented.
