  • To every spell, a counter.

I'd like to make a suggestion. Given that, ingame, there are some pretty nice custom spells and abilities, of the divination sort...

    Paladin's detect evil ability,
    Locate Person spell, etc

The two I'm thinking of, I would humbly suggest that maybe, given these things have been added, then appropriate counterspells should be added, as per PnP. Namely:

    Nondetection
    Undetectable Alignment

As these spells would have to be prepared in advance by someone, it would not result in rendering anything useless, and would help keep things even. I'm a big believer in having a possible counter to every ability, DnD is one giant rock / paper / scissors afterall.

      It does.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Also the nondetection aspect is filled with the protection from good/evil spells. I have found locating others with 'locate creature' fail if they are under the effect of a protection from alignment.

These things are good to know, but if you are not a spellcaster you are out of luck.

Personally I can use wands, but my wandmaker is nowhere to be found.

However, since we are in suggestions: Maybe some items could be added to faction stores that might cast Protection from Alignment 1/day or it could have charges could be added.

Non-detection used to grant you protection from other hostile divination spells as well didnt it?

things like See Invisibility & True Sight. That was in 2e though (my f/m/t had a cloak of non-detection for helping him maintain stealth while invisible)

Not sure about see invis, and true sight. It definitely negated clairaudience/clairvoyance, and, locate person, etc.

Anyways. Thanks, I didn't know about these spell changes. Much appreciated.

You could.... always not act like a jerk in public and give people suspicion to use Detect Evil on you I know one Paladin that only did use it in those cases; yes, she obviously partied with people that were evil, but they didn't commit any acts of evil when they were with her, or give her reason to be suspicious.

If I am not mistaken, I believe you can only use divination spells on an individual that you know relatively well, or possess some personal item of.

Using Locate Person on someone you barely even know the name of seems a bit unreasonable, though the spell in itself is an excellent idea. Sending I believe is the same way.

Detect Evil has counters and the user needs to be relatively close anyway. I believe I recall some arguing that it is not a spell that can be used in intense situations, such as battle.

I agree with Vic that there should be counters, even some non-magical ways, to spells of detection. However, these seem to be in place already. I am against the idea of Non-detection keeping you invisible through things like True Sight and Dragon Sight. Invisibility in itself is already useful enough as it is and spells like True Sight and Dragon Sight are the counters to it. We don't need too many counter-counters lol.
